The Stormers held on to secure their fifth Super Rugby victory of the season when they beat the Reds 20-15 at Newlands in Cape Town.
The Stormers scored the only try of the match by Jean de Villers shortly after half time and all of the other points in the match came from penalty kicks for both sides.
The result ends a three match losing streak against all teams for the Stormers and mathematically keeps them in the running for the play offs.
The Stormers and the Reds both went into the match on the back of defeats and looked fairly evenly matched in the first half when a lone Joe Pietersen penalty separated the teams at the halftime break.
After the smallish crowd by Newlands standards (25,134), gave the Stormers a rousing reception, both sides showed a willingness to run ball-in-hand whenever the opportunity beckoned, even though tactical kicks may have been a better option at times.
The Reds managed to stretch the opposition defence on occasion and they relied on chip kicks to get behind the Stormers defence.
The ploy did not yield any dividends, mainly because the Stormers scrambled well.
Both sides spurned early scoring opportunities via penalty kicks as Pietersen (Stormers) and Quade Cooper (Reds) could not find their range, but the homeside's sharp-shooter came good in the final minute of the first half to secure a 3-0 lead.
The Stormers finished the half on a promising note with a strong counter-attack after the Reds had threatened their tryline.
However, the team just could not break through as the Aussie visitors kept their defensive lines intact.
After the break, the Stormers turned their fortunes around with an eight-point burst in the opening 10 minutes, while the Reds reduced the deficit with two Cooper penalties.
Stormers flyhalf Elton Janties landed a fine crossfield kick which fullback Joe Pietersen gathered well before he reeled out a scoring pass to centre Jean de Villiers, who ran in from 25 metres out to snatch the first try of the match.
Over the next 10-minute passage of play, both sides conceded penalties as they tried to be adventurous on attacks.
During this time, Cooper goaled three penalties and Pietersen two which gave the Stormers a 14-9 lead just on the hour.
The Stormers suffered another setback a few minutes later when Cooper slotted over a long-range penalty from the halfway line to reduce the deficit to two points, and the Aussie visitors seemed to enjoy a fresh burst of energy as play moved towards the finish.
The Reds' pressure earned them a penalty 12 minutes from the end, and Cooper's strike allowed his side to take the lead for the first time in the match.
However, Pietersen wiped out the advantage minutes later with two penalties in quick succession to open up a five-point cushion for the home side.
The match went four minutes into injury time as the Reds pressed hard for a try that could have won the match.
Eventually though Tiaan Liebenberg won a penalty and Elton Jantjies kicked the ball out to end the match.
