The New Zealand Rugby Union have admitted that they have offered Sonny Bill Williams a contract that would see him return to Super Rugby in 2014 for the Chiefs.

New Zealand media reports that the union has offered Williams a three-year deal which would see him return to rugby union next season and extend his 19-test All Blacks career.

Williams left the 15-a-side game earlier this year to return to his first love, league, after a four-year flirtation with union.

But NZRU CEO Steve Tew told reporters Sunday that an offer has been made to Williams and his representatives.

"We have been talking to them and the dialogue has been positive but we don't have any ink on paper," Tew said, in quotes widely reported by local media.

Williams began his career in league with the Canterbury Bulldogs before leaving for union when he joined French Top 14 outfit Toulon in 2008.

After two years in France he moved back home and helped New Zealand win the World Cup on their own territory in 2011.

He spent one season with the Crusaders and then moved to the Chiefs where he helped the Waikato team win their first Super Rugby title.

However, at the beginning of this year he moved back to league and the Sydney Roosters as he bids to become the first person to win the World Cup in both rugby codes.

The league version takes place later this year in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France.
