Former Springbok captain Victor Matfield looks set to make his playing comeback this weekend on Saturday when the Bulls face the Stormers in a Super Rugby warm up match.
Thirty-six-year-old Matfield retired from playing rugby after appearing for a Barbarians team in November 2011. His final appearance for the Springboks was at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Matfield has been in training since August last year in preparation for his comeback and is understood to be in good physical condition.
Matfield wants another chance to appear at a Rugby World Cup and it appears that only a few administrative issues at the SA Rugby Union (SARU) are delaying the official announcement of his comeback.
The line out specialist has kept up to speed with the game whilst in retirement by being a TV commentator and the Bulls line out coach in recent times.
Matfield plans to use the Super Rugby season to prove that he still has what it takes to make it at international level under his former Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer who now coaches the Springboks.
