The Highlanders have revealed that fullback Ben Smith is still in a Sydney hospital after he picked up an infection during Sunday's Super Rugby match against the Waratahs.
Smith remained in Sydney Australia on Sunday after the rest of the team travelled back to New Zealand and was treated overnight in hospital.
The All Black fullback was meant to be discharged on Tuesday but now Team Doctor, Greg Macleod, in conjunction with Sydney doctors have decided to keep Smith in hospital overnight to continue treatment.
A Highlanders statement said that Smith was responding well to treatment and is due for discharge tomorrow morning where he is booked on a flight back to Dunedin first thing.
The infection is thought to have come from superficial graze on Smith’s leg during the Highlanders 44-16 loss to the Waratahs.
A decision on whether or not Smith will play on Saturday against the Crusaders in Christchurch will be made later on in the week.
The Highlanders are currently in fourth place overall and although a losing bonus point could prove to be enough to ensure they reach the play offs depending on other results while a bonus point victory would make the New Zealand Conference winners provided that the Crusaders don't earn a bonus point.
