The Crusaders sealed second place in the final Super Rugby standings when they beat the Highlanders 34-8 with a bonus point at AMI Stadium in Christchurch.

The result means that the Sharks need to beat the Stormers by 35 points and with a bonus point to overtake them in the standings.

The result also means that the Crusaders have won the New Zealand Conference and that the Highlanders will finish in sixth place.

As it stands the Waratahs and the Crusaders would get next weekend off and the Sharks will host the Highlanders and the Brumbies host the Chiefs.

The Crusaders took control of the match after the first quarter and went into the lead with a series of penalties from Dan Carter.

The first try of the match came shortly before the half time mark when Matt Todd was driven over the tryline in a maul.

Carter, who had an off night with the boot, missed the conversion but the Crusaders took a 17-3 lead into the break.

The Crusaders domination picked up where it left off in the second half as the home side won a line out on the Highlanders 5m line and sent Todd over for his second try.

The Crusaders third try came three minutes later as Nemani Nadolo went over after receiving the ball from Kieran Read and Israel Dagg who impressed with their handling of the ball.

The Highlanders scored their first try in the 65th minute when Richard Buckman got back to his feet after being tackled and went for the line.

Lima Sopoaga missed the conversion and the Highlanders were unable to add to their points for the rest of the match.

With ten minutes remaining the Crusaders secured the bonus point try using the line out and maul but this time replacement Corey Flynn crossed the tryline.

More to follow.
