CAPE TOWN – The Lions, the Sharks and the Vodacom Blue Bulls each scored their second consecutive win in the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division providing convincing evidence of a looming showdown amongst the teams in Section X once the tournament nears its closing stages.
The top two in the section will qualify for the semi-finals come October and away form and bonus points could hold the key to as to who makes it.
Ironically all three had “away” wins at the weekend. The Lions retained top spot in the Section after a hard-fought 37 – 21 win over the Impala Leopards in Potchefstroom on Friday, earning a vital bonus point, while the Sharks came from behind to beat Wildeklawer Griquas 28 – 27 in Kimberley and the Blue Bulls scored a narrow 18 – 10 win over Investec Western Province in Cape Town.
The only Section X team not to win at the weekend were the Absa-sponsored Boland Cavaliers, who went down 15 – 46 against the Vodacom Cheetahs in Bloemfontein. The result kept the Cheetahs in top spot of Section Y with 5 points, three more than Western Province.
With the Lions and the Sharks both having tough assignments this week, the Blue Bulls will be looking to their clash against the Leopards in Pretoria as a potential “five-pointer”. The Lions host Investec Western Province in Johannesburg and the Sharks are at home to the Cheetahs in Durban. The final Premier Division fixture this coming weekend sees the Cavaliers at home to Griquas.
