Australia started the Rugby Championship struggling but since the second half of the first Test, they have improved vastly and even scored 7 unanswered tries over two tests against the All Blacks.
Much has been said about the Perth factor in this match. The Springboks have played eight times on the west coast, winning three and drawing one.
We are waiting for the kick-off.
.00: BEEP! BEEP! Glen Jackson gets the game underway in Perth after the ‘Welcome to country’ and national anthems. Australia has beaten South Africa in seven of the last eight Tests down under and if they win by 15 points or more, will move from fifth to third in the World rankings.
.00: Bernard Foley’s kick-off did not go 10 and so the Boks will have the first scrum of the game on halfway. Australia wins a free-kick, go quickly, but are pinged at the ruck for holding. Good work by Pieter-Steph du Toit.
.00: South Africa gets a penalty for an infringement at the lineout by the Wallabies, who took Du Toit out in the air.
.00: PENALTY! Elton Jantjies makes no mistake and the Boks are on the board: 0-3
.00: Andries Coetzee kicks directly into touch and the play is called back to South Africa’s 22. The home team get the penalty for not rolling away and will kick at goal.
.00: PENALTY! Foley levels the scores: 3-3
.00: Malcolm Marx loses the ball in contact and the Wallabies have the scrum. Australia gets a free-kick and goes quickly.
.00: Courtnall Skosan knocks on the high ball from Kurtley Beale and Australia attack the wide channels. eventually, the Boks are penalised for hands in the ruck.
.00: MISS! Reece Hodge’s kick drifts wide and the scores stay the same: 3-3
.00: Coetzee’s clearance is charged down, but the ball goes dead. South Africa have been nervy with possession, but strong at the breakdown.
.00: Sean McMahon takes Coetzee out in the air, but it was not malicious.
.00: The scrum disintegrates but the referee lets play continue. Ross Cronje plays Jantjies and the standoff finds a good touch. The Springboks steal the Wallaby lineout and attack just outside the Aussie 22.
.00: Tatafu Polota-Nau heads to the sidelines for an HIA assessment. Jordan Uelese comes on for his debut.
.00: South Africa goes to their driving maul, marching the Aussies backwards before going wide. Coetzee puts the ball on the boot, forcing Israel Folau back. The fullback clears and the Boks have the lineout.
.00: It’s all a bit scrappy, with both sides knocking on and losing their own lineout throws; the scrums have been poor, too.
.00: Glen Jackson tells the front rows that there have been five scrums, but four have been “rubbish”.
.00: Australia gets the penalty and instead of going for goal, they kick to the corner. However, they throw in skew (the second one, but the linesman missed the first) and the visitors have the scrum feed inside their 22.
.00: TRY Jesse Kriel! Cronje wins the loose ball at the ruck, plays Kriel, who kicks ahead. Raymond Rhule chases but, after a shoulder-to-shoulder with Michael Hooper, Kriel gathers and scores in the corner: 3-8
.00: Jantjies’ kick is in-off the post: 3-10
.00: TRY Kurtley Beale! Good work from McMahon and Will Genia in the build up. Some quick ball at the ruck sees Beale dart through a big gap and score: 8-10
.00: Foley levels the scores for the second time tonight: 10-all
.00: Eben Etzebeth is taken out in the air by Issy Folau and South Africa get a penalty.
.00: MISS! Jantjies pushes his kick out to the right; poor miss from the flyhalf: 10-all
.00: Adam Coleman loses the lineout. Etzebeth is putting the Aussie locks under enormous pressure by contesting every throw. Scrum to the Boks, inside the Wallaby 10.
.00: South Africa goes wide, but Coetzee loses the ball trying to offload to Jaco Kriel on his inside. The match is still very scrappy; passes are being dropped, the ball lost in contact and the set pieces have been poor.
.00: Australia use Tevita Kuridrani to bash a hole in the Boks’ midfield, but the ball is lost at the breakdown. The home team gets the ball back and attack the short side through Kuridrani and Henry Speight. Somehow, instead of going wide to the open side, they go short and lose the ball forwards.
.00: BIG SCRUM from Beast Mtawarira. South Africa kick to touch, but it’s not out. What is going on here?
.00: Australia win another penalty, and Hooper calls for a shot at goal. Foley will attempt a kick from 39 metres out and in front. The hooter sounds…
.00: PENALTY! It’s down the middle and Australia take a three-point halftime lead: 13-10
The halftime score was Wallabies 13 Springboks 10
.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are back underway at nib Stadium. Elton Jantjies’ kick is high and into the Aussie 22. Taken by Michael Hooper, the home team take the ruck and clear.
.00: Australia is camped on South Africa’s try line; they go for the lineout drive.
.00: TRY Tatafu Polota-Nau! The Springboks fell off the rolling maul, which created a hole for the Aussies to drive through and score: 18-10
.00: The conversion is good from Foley: 20-10
.00: Beale kicks to touch, but boy, what a tackle from Hooper on Jan Serfontein. South Africa really should have scored there.
.00: PENALTY! Jantjies reduces the deficit to seven: 20-13
.00: Another lost lineout by Australia, which then leads to a scrum penalty. Scott Sio looks bemused.
.00: TRY Malcolm Marx! Wow! The Springboks go to their driving maul and bulldoze the Wallaby pack, which splintered, driving them back 18 metres: 20-18
.00: Jantjies levels the scores: 20-all
.00: Beale gets into the first receiver and puts in a wonderful little dink, which rolls all the way to the corner flag. Great kick and even better opportunity from the lineout, here.
.00: Yet another mistake by Coleman in the lineout. The Boks get the scrum and a chance to release some pressure.
.00: A poor scrum by Australia sees Siya Kolisi gathers the loose ball and sent Jesse Kriel away. The centre drives forward, carrying Wallabies defenders with him. He offloads but the ball is lost forward with the try line at South Africa’s mercy.
.00: MASSIVE SCRUM! The Springboks’ pack dismantles their opponents and win another penalty. Two big scrums in a row by the visitors. Jantjies will kick at goal.
.00: PENALTY! The kick is good and South Africa lead for the first time in the second half: 20-23
.00: Francois Hougaard is penalised for taking out Will Genia at the breakdown. Foley will take a shot at goal.
.00: PENALTY! IT’s good from Foley, who makes it five from five tonight: 23-all
.00: Australia has the scrum feed: can they hold?
.00: Great work at the breakdown by South Africa, winning the penalty after the Wallabies went 11 phases of play. Kuridrani leaves the field in his 50th Test.
.00: The clock is ticking down. The last time these two teams drew in Perth was at Subiaco Oval in 2001.
.00: The hooter sounds…and it’s another draw in Perth.
