Australia beat South Africa in Rugby Championship

The second match in Rugby Championship Round 3 is in Brisbane where Australia’s Wallabies host South Africa’s Springboks.

Elton Jantjies kicks off and the match is underway.

2.00; South Africa make a strong start as they press Australia back into their 22.  Oupa Mohoje almost gets through to score but is stopped. South Africa keep the ball moving and Warren Whiteley goes over to score. TRY!

3.00: Jantjies takes the conversion kick and nails it.

5.00: Penalty to South Africa. They kick for touch.

6.00: South Africa concede a penalty for obstruction.

8.00: Quade Cooper for Australia chips the ball ahead and get the ball into South Africa’s 22. They chase but neither side can control the ball and Australia have an attacking scrum.

9.00: Scrum penalty to Australia. Bernard Foley will have a shot at the posts.

11.00: Foley takes the kick and he nails it.

13.00: Australia have the ball inside South Africa#s half. As they get to the third phase they lose the ball and South Africa start their attack.

17.00: Australia go on the attack in South Africa’s 22  but the ball is intercepted by Adriaan strauss and Elton Jantjies chips the ball ahead for Johan Goosen who chases and scores. TRY!

18.00: Jantjies adds the conversion.

20.00: South Africa go through 6 phases on attack and they get into Australia’s half. The whistle goes for a forward pass by Jantjies.

21.00: TMO Ben Skeen spots a neck roll by Tendai Mtawarira but all that comes of it is a penalty for Australia. Foley finds touch with the kick.

23.00: Another penalty to Australia so they kick for touch and set up a line out near the 5m line. Australia win the line out but South Africa defend it and when the ball goes dead SA get the scrum put in.

24.00: South Africa win the scrum but get trapped in their 22 and Jantjies has to force the ball into touch on the 22.

25.00: Australia win the line out and kick high and chase. Australia get called back for a penalty at the line out. South Africa get a warning for illegally slowing the ball down.

26.00: Australia set up the line out on the 5m line. They win the ball by going short and then wide. Hodge gets tackled short. Australia recycle and change sides and Adam Coleman scores in the corner.

28.00: Foley takes the conversion kick from out wide. He nails it.

31.00: Australia go through the phases slowly gaining ground on South Africa but the movement ends with a forward pass.

32.00: Australia turn the ball over and attack in South Africa’s 22. They start to make ground but South Africa get caught offside at the ruck. Penalty to Australia. Referee Owens has another word with Strauss about infringements.

34.00: Foley lines up the posts and he nails it.

36.00: Penalty to Australia as Lood de Jager is caught offside again. Folau boots the ball into touch.

37.00: South Africa come away with the ball after the line out and run the ball into the Australia 22. They chip the ball ahead and Foley makes the mark. The TMO reviews a late charge by Israel Folau. Just a penalty. South Africa will kick for posts.

38.00: Jantjies takes the kick but he misses.

39.00: Australia follow up after the restart and knock on.

40.00: The siren sounds but there will be a scrum. The ball is kicked into touch so it’s half time.

Australia kick off and the second half is underway.

Australia make a strong start but Eben Etzebeth slows the ball down illegally and is yellow carded. (13-14)

42.00: Bernard Foley takes the penalty shot and nails it to put Australia into the lead.

44.00: Australia turn the ball over and run it into South Africa’s half but then South Africa turn the ball over. Australia get a boot to the ball and it goes into touch near the 5m line.

45.00: South Africa win the line out and clear the ball into touch.

46.00: Australia get the ball on attack and Folau makes ground but offloads to Samu Kerevi who crashes over to score. The TMO will review the grounding. He was in touch before he got the ball down so no try. Touch in goal.

46.00 As Australia attack the double whistle goes because Johan Goosen has taken a heavy blow. He carries on and Australia have a scrum.

47.00: Australia attack in South Africa’s 22. The Springboks press them out of the 22 and turn the ball over.

48.00: Australia turn the ball over but kick it away. They too kick it away and SA respond by kicking to Israel Folau and Australia run the ball.

49.00: Australia manage to stretch South Africa’s defence but the pass goes to ground. The whistle goes just as Scott Sio races for the line. Penalty for tackling a player without the ball. TMO replays suggest that Sio should not have been called back.

51.00: Genia clears the ball from a ruck and Australia chase. Faf de Klerk gets trapped but recycles the ball. The ball changes sides a few times but then goes into touch. SA line out.

52.00: Etzebeth comes back on and wins the line out. South Africa go through the phases gradually making ground.

54.00: Penalty to Australia. They kick for touch. Stephen Moore is off.

56.00: Australia get the ball from a scrum. As they pass the ball down the line Adriaan Strauss intercepts and SA win a penalty for offside.

58.00: Eben Etzebeth gets involved in a scuffle with Allan Alaalatoa and gets his shirt ripped so has to get a replacement which holds up the match. The match resumes with a scrum. Bryan Habana has to come off for a concussion test – he refuses to leave but is forced off – and Lionel Mapoe comes on.

59.00: Australia win a penalty from the scrum. Incorrect binding. Good result from a new Wallaby front row. Australia kick for touch.

60.00: Australia win the line out and move the ball to the backs. They go wide and get to 10m out. They keep the ball alive and driving forward through the phases. Slow but steady.

61.00: Australia look to go wide but Bernard Foley slips back in and crashes over in the tackle and scores. TRY! 18 phases.

63.00: Foley adds the conversion. Habana is back on having passes his concussion test.

66.00: Penalty to South Africa. Morne Steyn who has recently comes on takes the kick and nails it.

67.00: Another penalty to South Africa. Not releasing the ball. Steyn kicks for touch.

68.00: Drew Mitchell comes on for Dane Haylett-Petty as South Africa win the line out and use the maul.

69.00: South Africa move the ball wide but knock on when they get to the 5m line.

70.00: The scrum has to be re-set. Australia win the scrum and Pocock runs it but passes the ball straight into touch.

73.00: Bryan Habana kicks the ball upfield but it’s too big so the Wallabies get a scrum inside SA’s half.

74.00: Australia win the scrum and go through the phases until they are caught accidentally offside. SA scrum.

75.00: Penalty for collapsing to South Africa. Steyn kicks for touch.

77.00: South Africa win the line out and attack. As they get into the Australian 22 the Australia turn the ball over and kick it upfield which forces South Africa to attack from deep.

78.00: Australia turn the ball over but Genia boots it away. SA kick it back and the Wallabies run it but pass forward again. SA scrum.

79.00: Lionel Mapoe comes on for Francois Hougaard. SA win the scrum and run the ball from their half. Australia turn the ball over and Genia kicks deep. South Africa knock on – thats it. Australia have won.
