Seven players have been selected in the Blues’ Super 14 Wider Training Squad.

The players are from Auckland, North Harbour and Taranaki, and will train with the main Blues’ squad.

Hooker Laurence Corlett works fulltime in Taranaki and will not be re-locating to Auckland. He will however join the Blues at various stages for concentrated skills training.

Wider Training Squad:

Laurence Corlett
Position: Hooker
Province: Taranaki
Age: 28
Stats: 107kg, 1.82m

Laurence is an experienced campaigner who is a typically rugged Taranaki front row forward. His game should go to a new level with the specialised skills training he will get.

Jarek Goebel
Position: Midfield / Wing
Province: Auckland
Age: 22
Stats: 90kg, 1.76m

Much was expected of Jared in 2007 but the talented midfielder received a season-ending injury prior to the Air New Zealand Cup season kick-off. Strong and fast, Jarek is a player of the future.

Chris Heard
Position: Prop
Province: Auckland
Age: 25
Stats: 113kg, 1.93m

Chris was in the Blues squad this year, and played nearly every match for the all-conquering Auckland team in 2007. His appearance in the Wider Training Squad is a measure of the front rowing depth in the Blues.

Chris Lowrey
Position: No 8 / Flanker
Province: Auckland
Age: 21
Stats: 108kg, 1.93m

Chris played for the NZ Colts against Canada this year, and his outstanding performances for unbeaten Ponsonby made him an easy winner of the Auckland Club Player of the Year Award. He is a highly talented ball player and seriously good at getting over the advantage line.

Lachie Munro
Position: First five
Province: Auckland
Age: 21
Stats: 90kg, 1.80m

Lachie is a NZ Sevens and NZ Colts rep, and would have gained a great deal of experience with Auckland this winter. He is a brilliant attacking weapon and should respond well to the professional environment.

Chris Smith
Position: Lock
Province: North Harbour
Age: 19
Stats: 105kg, 1.95m

One of the brightest stars in the New Zealand game, Chris will certainly benefit from the intense training he will get at the Blues. He was captain of the NZ Under 19 side that won the IRB World Under 19 Championship earlier this year in Ireland.

Chris Smylie
Position: Halfback
Province: North Harbour
Age: 25
Stats: 95kg, 1.80m

It is a homecoming from Otago for the born and bred West Aucklander. Chris has rejoined North Harbour and the aggressive halfback will be excellent back-up for Taniela Moa and Danny Lee. Chris was voted NPC Division One Player of the Year in 2005.
