After a sharp decline in form toward the end of the Super 14 season, which saw them meet their Waterloo in the shape of South Africa, the Blues are ready to head back to New Zealand.

Amidst player indiscipline and key injuries and nightmare touring schedules, the Blues have faltered after being the stand-out team of the early rounds.

Late losses to the Stormers, Bulls and twice the Sharks ended their title hopes.

After going down to the Sharks on Saturday, skipper Troy Flavell conceded that it had been too difficult for them to carry their initial form through.

“It’s a hard thing to keep that form, and the Sharks have managed to do it, so hats off to them.

“It was relentless out there, and there was a lot of pressure on everyone.

“It’s been a long road for us, and we are just looking to get home to see our friends and family.”

Coach David Nucifora concurred.

“It was a great effort out there today. I was proud of the guys. It’s been a hard month for us.

“We were right there until the last ten minutes, and we just didn’t take all our chances which you have to in a semi-final.

“We have made big improvements this year. To peform in a cauldron like this in Durban is a great learning experience.”
