The Blues have identified former Hurricanes and All Blacks captain Tana Umaga
as the key to them turning around their coaching problems.

Umaga is currently in Italy as an assistant coach of New Zealand at the World
Rugby Under-20s Championship.

The former All Black captain is understood to have met with Blues officials
at their Mt Albert headquarters before he left for Italy.

According to reports in the NZ Herald Umaga was offered a job with the Auckland Super Rugby
franchise who have still not decided what head coach John Kirwan’s future is
with the side.

The Blues had their worst Super Rugby season in history under Kirwan this year
and the board are understood to be split on whether to advertise his position.

Umaga has not yet coached at Super Rugby level but has led Counties Manukau
at ITM Cup level.
