Hurricanes beat Blues in Auckland

Auckland’s Blues host the Hurricanes in the opening match of Super Rugby Rd.13 and they will be looking to end a losing streak of five straight losses to the Wellington side.

The Blues have played the Hurricanes 28 times in Super Rugby and they have won 14 matches and lost 13. There has been one draw between the sides. This gives the Blues a record of winning 50% of their matches against the Hurricanes.

  • The Hurricanes have won their last five games against the Blues, three of those victories coming at Eden Park.
  • The Canes have won their last four games against sides in the New Zealand conference, only once before have they won five such games on the bounce (W5 in 2015).
  • The Blues are winless in 15 games against New Zealand-based opposition (D1, L14), although 10 of their defeats in that run have come by single-figure margins.
  • The Blues enjoy 17 minutes and 27 seconds of time in possession per game this season, more than any other squad in the competition.
  • Beauden Barrett has provided three try assists via kicks this season, more than any other player in the competition.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Auckland.

.00: The Hurricanes are inside the Blues’ half and using their wings as battering rams.

.00: Some excellent defensive work results in the Blues winning possession after a knock on.

.00: The scrum goes down again, and the referee awards the visitors a penalty. Good scrum from Jeff Toomaga-Allen.

.00: TRY! Easy as you like. Beauden Barrett kicked to the corner and the Hurricanes set up a driving maul. Sam Lousi gathered and Ricky Riccitelli finished the move when he flopped over the try-line. 0-5

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett adds the extras. 0-7

.00: The Hurricanes go wide, but Ben Lam is tackled into touch. Sonny Bill Williams wins the penalty after Matt Proctor denies him the chance to take a quick lineout.

.00: The Blues go through several phases of attack inside the Hurricanes 22. Ardie Savea is caught offsides, and Stephen Perofeta kicks to the corner.

.00: The Blues driving maul is not as effective as the Canes. They manage to string together 10 phases of bashing away at the opposition’s defence before winning another penalty.

.00: PENALTY! Perofeta puts the home team on the board. 3-7

.00: Augustine Pulu is penalised for a dangerous tackle on Nehe Milner-Skudder. Barrett sends the ball to the corner.

.00: The Blues contest the driving maul, this time. Brad Shields tries to go through the middle of the ruck, but he loses the ball forward after a good tackle by Ross Wright.

.00: Decent scrum from the Blues’ pack. Pulu plays Perofeta, who can only clear to just outside his 22.

.00: The Blues get another scrum, which they consolidate. Pulu goes wide to the blindside and Matt Duffie grubbers the ball deep into touch inside the Hurricanes half.

.00: Ardie Savea wins a penalty at the breakdown. Ofa Tuungafasi is caught in possession which results in Savea winning the penalty for not rolling away.

.00: The Blues have steadied the ship and are enjoying the better of the game.

.00: TRY! Sonny Bill breaks the line with a step and puts Orbyn Leger away with a wonderful one-handed offload. Typical Sonny Bill magic. 8-7

.00: MISS! Oh dear! Perofeta misses a sitter to the groans of the sparse home crowd. 8-7

.00: The Hurricanes coming back down the field, but their handling is not as efficient or precise as usual. They do win a penalty for an illegal sack of the maul. Barrett kicks to the corner.

.00: TRY! Gareth Evans takes a quick-tap penalty and barges his way over the whitewash. His low drive cannot be stopped by Patrick Tuipulotu and Tuungafasi. The blues turned their backs allowing the No 8 an easy charge towards the line; poor from Tana Umaga’s men. 8-12

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett won’t miss from almost in front. 8-14

.00: The Blues concede their eighth penalty. They illegally sack the driving maul, again. The Hurricanes go to the lineout for another drive.

.00: Riccitelli thinks he’s scored again, but Jaco Peyper says he was held up and used a ‘second movement’ in the act of grounding. The Hurricanes will have an attacking scrum to the right of the posts.

.00: After 12 phases, Murphy Taramai is pinged for an illegal side entry to the ruck. The penalty count is 9-3 in favour to the Hurricanes. It is only a matter of time before a card is shown to the home team.

.00: Shields is penalised for breaking off the scrum early. A technical call that Peyper loves to show the world that he knows the laws and will use them in the most unexpected fashion, or moment before putting it away for the rest of the season.

The halftime score was Blues 8 Hurricanes 14

.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in New Zealand. Peyper has handed the whistle to assistant Paul Williams because he is not feeling well.

.00: Jerome Kaino is pinged for not rolling away. This will be interesting with the referee change. How will it affect or change the momentum of the game?

.00: The Hurricanes spread the ball left and right before Riccitelli is stripped. The Blues counter-attack is halted after Pulu is caught with a high tackle. No card issued, just penalty. Perofeta kicks to the 22.

.00: The Blues botch another lineout.

.00: Matt Proctor is pinged underneath the posts. The blues tap-and-go.

.00: TRY! The Blues go 11 phases before Tuungafasi crossed. Sonny Bill went close, Parsons, too before the big man drove over for his team’s second try. 13-14

.00: CONVERSION! Perofeta slots the kick to give his team the lead. 15-14

.00: TJ Perenara comes on and immediately makes a break. Williams has to clear after regaining the lost ball, but the Hurricanes keep coming back at the Blues.

.00: TRY! Milner-Skudder crashes over the goal-line after Ardie Savea’s mini-break on the blindside. Rieko Ioane could not push the fullback into touch. Perenara’s cut-out pass made a four-on-five, a two-on-one in the Hurricanes’ favour. 15-19

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett draws his side-line kick inside the right-hand post. 15-21

.00: Milner-Skudder is subbed off. On comes Jordie Barrett. My word, the Hurricanes have some depth in world-class players, which is insane.

.00: There is a mix-up between Kaino and Caleb Clarke which almost results in Perenara scoring.

.00: TRY! Sam Lousi crosses after Evans is tackled short. Evans won the lineout, too which set up the counter-attack on the Blues line. 15-26

.00: CONVERSION! Barrett extends the Hurricanes’ lead. 15-28

.00: The Blues get held up in the maul. Their set-piece has been poor, losing three lineouts from five attempts and a scrum. The lineout drive has been easily defended by the Wellington side.

.00: Sonny Bill carries past the gain-line and almost gets another outrageous offload away, but he held on and the Blues recycle and go blind.

.00: The attack is halted after Perenara wins the penalty at the breakdown, saving the day for his side.

.00: The Hurricanes have gone 13 phases and win the penalty. The Blues defending has been good and their scrum has got better in the second-half, but they cannot stop the force of the Canes. Barrett calls for the kicking tee.

.00: PENALTY! Beauden Barrett slots the kick and pushes the lead to three converted tries. 15-31

.00: Time is running out for the Blues, but Sonny Bill knocks on. They found a gap but could not capitalise on it. The game is up, however, Umaga’s side is chasing a bonus-point.

.00: TRY! It’s the Hurricanes who get the bonus-point. Ngani Laumape took the ball at first-receiver and put in a cross-kick which was gathered by Jordie Barrett, who offloads inside to Proctor for the score. 15-36

.00: MISS! Barrett misses his first of the night, but it’s inconsequential. 15-36
