Hurricanes Super Rugby winning coach Chris Boyd has signed a two year contract extension with the Wellington based franchise.

The former Wellington Lions coach has led the Hurricanes to two Super Rugby finals – in 2015 and 2016.

The Hurricanes missed the play offs in 2014 which indicates how Boyd has transformed the side.

Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee has confirmed on Newstalk ZB that Boyd will stay on for another two Super Rugby seasons.

“He is an unsung hero,” Lee told NewstalkZB.

“He’s just an outstanding rugby coach.”

“People talk about all these amazing international rugby coaches around the world, but Chris Boyd, I have so much respect for him as a guy and as a coach.”

The Hurricanes victory under Boyd puts him in contention to succeed Steve Hansen as All Black coach when his contract expires after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
