Brumbies sign Hewat as Super Rugby backs coach

Canberra’s Super Rugby franchise the Brumbies have signed former Waratahs full-back Peter Hewat as backs coach for the the 2018 Super Rugby season.

Hewat, who bagged 636 points in only fifty matches for the Waratahs across three seasons, has been coaching at Suntory Sungoliath in the Japanese Top League for the past five years having been a standout as a player for the Asian powerhouse for a trio of years prior to his coaching appointment.

Having also played 78 times for London Irish in the English Premiership, Hewat will bring a wealth of knowledge to the role, linking up with fellow Assistant Coaches Laurie Fisher and Peter Ryan as part of Head Coach Dan McKellar’s staff.

“Peter was obviously a very good player at the Waratahs and was known for his goal-kicking and his ability to score a try,” McKellar said.

“He has been at Suntory for eight years, four as a player and four as a coach, and, in my role as a consultant to Suntory, I have witnessed his progression.

“Peter is ready for an opportunity to coach at Super Rugby level. His focus will be heavily on the skills aspect and he will be a huge benefit to our backs in particular.”

Hewat himself was anticipating an enjoyable challenge by joining the Australian Conference winners.

“I am certainly excited by the opportunity of joining the Brumbies and becoming a part of the Brumbies family,” Hewat commented. “The Brumbies are a globally-renowned team who, historically, have always played an attacking and exciting brand of rugby.

“I have had some very enjoyable times in Japan with Suntory but feel that the time is right for a return to Australia. The chance to be involved with a team like the Brumbies is fantastic.

“I have been keeping a close watch on them this season and am looking forward to teaming up with Dan, Laurie and Peter to help the team achieve its goals and challenge for another Super Rugby title.”
