Canberra’s Super Rugby team the Brumbies have signed scrumhalf Matt Lucas on a two-year deal that will see him join the team for the 2018 Super Rugby season.

The 25-year old has spent the previous five seasons with the Waratahs, making 33 appearances and scoring fourteen points.

Born and raised in Queensland, Lucas represented the Australian U20’s at the Junior World Cup in 2011 and 2012 before signing for the Waratahs prior to the 2013 season.

The scrumhalf has also represented the Sydney Rays in the National Rugby Championship since the competition’s inception in 2014, skippering the side since 2015.

Lucas said he was ecstatic to be joining the Brumbies.

“I am excited to be moving to the Brumbies and I am looking forward to getting to Canberra, settling in and producing my best,” Lucas said of his move from Sydney.

“The Brumbies have offered me a fantastic opportunity to come down to Canberra and be a part of such a proud and successful franchise. This is something I don’t take lightly and I can’t wait to do my best and hopefully add to the Brumbies proud history.

“We have two very good young scrum-halves at the Brumbies in Joe Powell and Ryan Lonergan, and I am looking forward to working with them in order for us, as a team, to be able to push towards winning another Super Rugby title.

“I very much enjoyed my four years with the Waratahs and thank them for giving me my start in professional rugby. But now I am fully focused on doing my best to earn a spot in the Brumbies squad and pull on that famous jersey in the Super Rugby competition in 2018.”

Brumbies Head Coach Dan McKellar was happy to have secured the services of Lucas for the next two seasons.

“It’s great for the Brumbies that we have managed to sign a scrum-half of the quality of Matt,” McKellar said.

“Matt is experienced when it comes to Super Rugby having played over thirty matches for the Waratahs and is no stranger to the professional game.

“Matt has a strong pass, kicks well off both feet and is a threat in attack. He is also a very good defender and is happy to get stuck in.

“We welcome Matt to Canberra and I am sure he will be a great addition to the Brumbies.”
