Bulls hooker Gary Botha will miss one third of the Super 14 as he damaged his medial ligaments, but his cruciate ligaments were only stretched. This means that he will be out for only six to eight weeks and not six months as was feared initially.

On Monday, team doctor Tommy Smook confirmed that Botha would miss the early part of the Bulls’ Super 14 campaign.”It’s not great news, but at least it is not as bad as it could have been,” responded Botha.

Coach Heyneke Meyer  is now looking for another hooker to fill in for Botha. Possibel candidates are South Africa Under-21 hooker Adriaan Strauss or South Africa Under-19 captain Chiliboy Ralepelle. Botha’s understudy Kobus van der Walt may also get a look in but there are question marks over his size.

The Bulls decided to opt out of their regular training session at Loftus on Monday with team doctor Tommy Smook saying, “We had a few bumps and niggles and we decided the guys should rather do just a conditioning session, but there is nothing too serious on that front to worry about”.
