South African Under-21 hooker Adriaan Strauss will play for the Cheetahs next year, in both the Super 14 and Currie Cup. It was confirmed on Thursday that the Cheetahs had won their tug-of-war with the Blue Bulls over the services of the talented No.2.

The Cheetahs had offered Strauss a contract, which the Bulls had contested on the grounds that they had the right to match any offer to the young star. The Bulls clearly thought they had done enough and the matter went to arbitration, with the ruling going in favour of the Cheetahs. Cheetahs coach Rassie Erasmus expressed his delight with the outcome of the matter.

“He will certainly get lots of game time here [with the Cheetahs],” Erasmus said.

Strauss will join his cousin Richardt Strauss, who is only 20 and was the Cheetahs’ first choice in the Currie Cup this year, and veteran Rich Verster in Bloemfontein.

Erasmus said they have now completed their recruitment for next year.

“We are happy with our squad as it is,” he added.

Adriaan Strauss made his Currie Cup debut for the Blue Bulls last year and played for SA U21 for the past two years. He also played several Super 14 games for the Bulls this past year.

He returns to Bloemfontein after finishing his schooling at Grey College.
