Chiefs & All Blacks player Sione Lauaki has been charged with assault after an early morning incident in the northern New Zealand city of Hamilton on Friday.

Few details are known as little has been released but the incident involved an alleged assault on a 26-year-old man in central Hamilton at about 5am.

Lauaki who is 24 plays flanker for Super 14 team the Chiefs, will appear in court on January 26.

Lauaki and Chiefs chief executive Gary Dawson would not comment on the case until it was dealt with by the courts.

Ex All Black lock Norm Maxwell was charged last year with assault and threatening behaviour after an incident in a Dunedin bar.

Lauaki has played seven tests for the All Blacks.
