Chiefs beat Brumbies in Hamilton




The first Super rugby match on Saturday is in Hamilton where the Chiefs will host the Brumbies where the Hamilton side will be hoping for a fourth straight win.#

The Chiefs have played the Brumbies 24 times in Super rugby since 1996 and the Chiefs have won 10 matches, lost 13 and drawn one.

  • The Chiefs have won their last three games on the bounce against the Brumbies, their longest ever winning streak against the Canberrans.

The Chiefs kick off and the match is underway.

1.00: The Brumbies win the first line out of the match, they try to attack but the Chiefs turn the ball over and take it into touch.

2.00: The Chiefs steal the line out and Damien McKenzie breaks through the Brumbies defence. The Chiefs get the ball into the Brumbies 22 but then the Brumbies turn the ball over and start to attack.

4.00: Penalty to the Brumbies. They kick for touch and take the line out option.

5.00: The Brumbies win the line out and get the ball to about 10m out but the Chiefs turn the ball over and kick it into touch.

6.00: Penalty to the Brumbies. They kick for touch, fail to find it so the Chiefs kick the ball out on the opposite side.

8.00: The Brumbies win the line out but the Chiefs stop their attack and when the ball goes dead the Chiefs get the scrum put in.

11.00: Penalty to the Chiefs against Nic Mayhew for offside. The Chiefs will have a shot at the posts. McKenzie lines up the ball for a shot.

12.00: McKenzie takes the kick and nails it. The Chiefs lead.

13.00: After the kick off McKenzie makes a break and almost gets through but is caught. Chiefs are starting to open things up.

15.00: As the Chiefs attack Christian Lealiifano almost gets an intercept with an open try line ahead. He knocks on. Meanwhile David Pocock has taken a knock and is down. The game is paused. Pocock carries on.

18.00; The Chiefs are taking control and moving the ball. They pass the ball on attack but there is a forward pass. At the scrum the Chiefs go down and the Brumbies get a free kick. They choose a scrum.

19.00; Penalty from the scrum to the Brumbies. They kick for touch.

22.00:The Chiefs go through 10 phases and get to the 50m line. The Chiefs pick and go and Nathan Harris drives over the line and scores. TRY!

24.00: McKenzie lines up the posts and takes the shot. He nails the conversion. Tom Cusack comes off for blood/HIA.

26.00: Penalty to the Brumbies. They take the line out and set it up 5m out.

27.00: The Brumbies win the line out and then a penalty for collapsing the maul. The Brumbies take another line out.

28.00: The Brumbies win the line out again but the ball is lost. The Chiefs kick it well downfield so the Brumbies start the attack again.

29.00: The Chiefs turn the ball over deep in their territory. The Chiefs slowly make ground but then McKenzie offloads and the Chiefs make it to the 22.

31.00: McKenzie gets back up and appears for the pass – when he gets it he slips off a tackle and races for the line and scores. TRY. 

32.00:McKenzie adds the conversion.

35.00: The Brumbies go through 15 phases and almost get to the Chiefs 22. Lealiifano almost got away which got them half the field. The Brumbies keep the ball moving and on the 22nd phase Tevita Kuridrani goes for the line and is stopped short. The Brumbies recycle and Rory Arnold goes over but loses the ball in the tackle.

36.00: Folau Fainga’a and Sam Cane leave the field. Looks to be an HIA. The Chiefs come away with the ball from the scrum. They get the ball into the Brumbies 22, Shaun Stevenson offloads to Toni Pulu but he loses the ball. Tom Cusack will not be returning from the HIA.

39.00: Penalty to the Brumbies for early engagement. The Brumbies take the line out and kick for touch.

The Brumbies win the line out but the ball goes to ground and the siren sounds. It’s half time.

40.00: The Brumbies kick off and the second half is underway. Sam Cane will not be returning for the second half as he has failed the HIA test.

45.00: The Chiefs go on the attack in the Brumbies 22. The Brumbies almost turn the ball over but there is a knock on.

48.00: The Brumbies win yet another penalty from the scrum. They kick for touch but Tom Banks fails to find touch so the Chiefs boot the ball back.

55.00: The Brumbies work the ball to the Chiefs try line. They have several goes at the line but the Chiefs defend and defend. The Brumbies keep banging away and then go wide to Henry Speight who slips over and scores. TRY! 

55.00: Lealiifano misses the conversion.

56.00: The Brumbies get the ball and break out on the wing. Pocock throws the ball out to Andrew Muirhead who races away until he is just caught. The Brumbies recycle and centre the ball where they win a penalty in front.

59.00: The Brumbies win a scrum but Damien McKenzie intercepts and races away. He is caught but keeps the ball alive. The Chiefs keep attacking and after coming up short of the line, they chip the ball ahead in front of the posts. The ball hits the post but Johnny Fa’auli catches the ball on the bounce and scores. TRY! 

61.00; The Conversion is added by Damien McKenzie.

64.00:  Jesse Parete is yellow carded for a late tackle while the Brumbies were on attack. He trots off to the bin.

70.00: The Brumbies attack the Chiefs just outside the Chiefs 22. Wharenui Hawera gets them through and sets up Tom Banks who races away to score. TRY!

71.00: Wharenui Hawera converts the try.

74.00: The Brumbies win a line out. Henry Speight gets the ball and slices through the Chiefs backs and scores. TRY! 

75.00: Hawera adds the conversion. Parete comes back on – while he was off the Brumbies scored 14 points.

76.00: Penalty to the Chiefs in front. McKenzie will have a shot at the posts.

77.00: McKenzie misses the kick.

78.00: The Brumbies put everything into a final attack. The Chiefs hang on.

80.00: The siren sounds as the Brumbies are judged to have knocked on. Replays show it might not have been the Brumbies. The Chiefs win the scrum kick the ball into touch and win the match.
