Chiefs beat Highlanders in Hamilton

The Chiefs have returned home from Japan where they played the Sunwolves last week as they host the Highlanders at home in Hamilton on Friday.

The Chiefs smashed the Sunwolves last week 10-61 but this weekend they face a Highlanders side that will be hurting after they were beaten 29-13 by the Hurricanes.

  • The Chiefs ran out to a 24-15 win in their last start against the Highlanders, snapping a six-game losing streak against them in which they had scored 20+ points in a game only once.
  • The Highlanders have won their last two away games against the Chiefs and will be searching for a third-straight win in such fixtures for the first time.

3.00 : At the restart Lima Sopoaga kicks the ball and goes down. Looks to be an Achilles injury, He has to leave the field and is replaced by Fletcher Smith.

7.00-: The Chiefs win a free kick from the scrum and take it quickly. They work thee ball to the 5m line through 8 phases and go wide.

9.00: The Chiefs keep the attack going and from side to side through 14 phases and they win a penalty in front of the posts.

11.00: Damien McKenzie takes the penalty kick, nails it and puts the Chiefs into the lead.

15.00: The Chiefs continue to attack the Highlanders, they almost get through as McKenzie sends a long ball wide but the Highlanders manage to kill off the attack and the Highlanders get the scrum put in.

19.00: Penalty to the Chiefs. Mckenzie takes the shot and again nails it.

22.00: The Highlanders get the ball into the Chiefs 22. A wide kick goes across the field for Waisake Naholo who chases and gathers the ball, dodges one tackle and goes in to score in the corner. TRY! 

24.00: Fletcher Smith takes the conversion from out wide. He nails it. Highlanders lead.

28.00: The Chiefs work the ball through 5 phases. They are not making much ground but McKenzie slices through and the Chiefs almost get to the 5m line. The ball gets turned over by the Highlanders but then there is a knock on.

36.00: The Highlanders win the ball from a scrum on their 22m line and clear the ball into touch.

38.00: The Chiefs manufacture a wonderful try. The Chiefs get the ball to the 5m line after several phases. Mckenzie chips the ball to the corner and Toni Pulu offloads the ball to Solomon Alaimalo who scores. TRY!

40.00: McKenzie slots the conversion. Chiefs lead and it’s half time.

The Chiefs make a powerful start again. The Chiefs break out of their 22, Anton Lienert-Brown makes huge ground but is stopped. The Chiefs get the ball into the Highlanders 22 and Taleni Seu offloads and the ball goes to ground. The Highlanders get to it but knock on.

43.00: The Chiefs win the scrum and McKenzie almost gets to the line with a sniping run. The ball is recycled and Nathan Harris goes over and scores. TRY!

44.00: McKenzie adds the conversion.

47.00; The Highlanders set up a line out in the Chiefs 22. They throw the ball in but the Chiefs come away with the ball and try to run it out of their 22. When they start to struggle they kick deep. The Highlanders counter through 5 phases and then win a penalty.

50.00: The Highlanders work the ball to the posts. They win another penalty for not rolling away. The Highlanders tap the ball and go wide for Tevita Li who scores in the corner. TRY! Credit to Aaron Smith for the awareness to spot the opening.

52.00: Smith takes the conversion from out wide but misses.

55.00: Charlie Ngatai comes on for the Chiefs. Lachlan Boshier also comes on for the hosts.

58.00: Penalty to the Chiefs. Smith takes the kick and nails it. Chiefs lead by 5.

60.00: The Chiefs win a line out in their 22. After one phase the ball goes to McKenzie who clears the ball into touch.

61.00: The Chiefs try to clear the ball again but McKenzie’s kick rebounds off a Highlanders player. The Highlanders get the ball and attack. The ball goes down the line and Patelsio Tomkinson scores. TRY!

63.00: Smith slots the conversion and the Highlanders lead.

65.00: Penalty for hands in the ruck to the Chiefs. They kick for touch and take the line out.  Liam Messam looks to have a hand injury and has been replaced (blood).

67.00: The Chiefs win the line out and build their attack. They go through 11 phases and Sean Wainui slides over to score in the corner. TRY! 

69.00: McKenzie takes the conversion kick from out wide. He nails it. Chiefs lead again.
