Defending Super Rugby champions the Crusaders have played the Hurricanes 35 times since 1996, the Saders winning 20 matches.

The Hurricanes have won 12 games and the teams have drawn three times.

  • The Crusaders will be aiming for a third-straight win over the Hurricanes for the first time since May 2008, after recording two wins over the Wellington side at AMI Stadium, last season.
  • The Hurricanes have won just three of their last eight fixtures but will be chasing back-to-back wins after a narrow 20-19 win over the Waratahs last week.
  • Scott Robertson’s men are chasing a record 17th-straight win on the bounce in Super Rugby – they previously won 16 straight games between April 2005 and April 2006.
  • The Hurricanes gained just 260 metres in Round 1, the fewest they have gained in a Super Rugby match since March 2016 (248 v Blues).
  • Manasa Mataele (Crusaders) scored a brace last week, his third brace in his last eight appearances (8 tries in total in those 8 games).

Match detail

We are waiting for the kickoff.

.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Christchurch after the first rendition of Vangelis’ Conquest of Paradise. Conditions are hard underfoot with the possibility of showers, later.

.00: Scott Barrett calls the first lineout for the home team. Matt Proctor is caught offsides and the ball is kicked to the corner by Richie Mo’unga.

.00: Andrew Makalio’s throw is skew, offering the visitors a reprieve.

.00: The scrum is reset.

.00: Referee Ben O’Keeffe pings Owen Franks for not pushing straight. Hurricanes clear the danger to the halfway line.

.00: Fletcher Smith’s kick rolls over the dead-ball line. It wasn’t a bad option, but the grass is short, the field still hard in the late summer and the wind behind the stand-off all contrived to compound the mistake.

.00: It’s a slow start to the game. The Crusaders have a penalty advantage.

.00: TRY! Scott Barrett gets his 10th Super Rugby try. The score came from Finlay Christie’s mistake. Mo’unga caught the loose ball and the Saders went wide before Barrett crashed over from close range. 5-0

.00: MISS! Mo’unga’s kick is no good. 5-0

.00: The Hurricanes use their physicality to get into the Crusaders’ 22. Jordie Barrett bounces Bryn Hall and a fellow Sader, but the ball is lost forward. Scrum to the hosts inside their 22.

.00: The scrum is reset, yet again.

.00: Manasa Mataele’s chip-kick sails into touch, but he was in his 22, so the lineout will be 30 metres out from his side’s try line.

.00: Another sustained series of possession ends with a lineout to the Hurricanes, who end up losing their throw and giving the home team a chance for an attack near their 22.

.00: The offloading from the two-times defending champs is superb; it’s the handling that is costing them.

.00: Mataele breaks threw a huge hole after a slick backline move from the first-phase ball at the lineout. Ben Lam came across from his wing to knock the ball out of the flyer’s hand.

.00: Jordie Barrett drills a penalty deep into the Crusaders’ 22. Skipper Matt Todd wins the turnover before Christie knocks-on the recovery.

.00: TRY! Mataele is causing trouble every time he touches the ball. He beats Gareth Evans then offloads a no-look, out-the-back-door flip in mid-air to stay infield, and Mo’unga, who runs down the touchline to score. Sensational from Mataele. 10-0

.00: MISS! The conversion is wide. 10-0

.00: TRY! WOW! David Havilli breaks in midfield, throws a long pass to George Bridge. The winger chases his own kick and is tackled short of the try line. The ball is recycled quickly and Jordan Taufua is in for the third Crusaders try. 15-0

.00: CONVERSION! The TMO awards the try and Mo’unga, finally, slots a conversion. 17-0

.00: It’s all going wrong for the Hurricanes. John Plumtree’s men have been shell-shocked by two quick scores. The Crusaders’ backs are mesmerising their counterparts.

.00: Todd wins another turnover. He takes the penalty quickly, which is strange because his team is deep inside their half and not making any progress.

.00: It’s razzle-dazzle from the Crusaders’ backline; they are throwing no-look passes, out-the-backdoor passes, flip-passes, and simply bamboozling the Canes. It’s glorious to watch.

.00: The Crusaders have made nine offloads to one and almost all of them are stunning. The Canes are losing every statistical battle and have no answers to combat the opposition.

.00: Penalty for collapsing goes to the hosts. Mo’unga’s kick is seven metres from the Hurricanes’ goal line. Makalio’s throw is lost, but the ball is quickly won back. Hurricanes are under the pump.

.00: Vince Aso is caught offsides, and after a long advantage, the ball is lost forward. Todd opts for a scrum under the posts.

.00: TRY! A massive scrum by the Robertson’s pack destroys the visitors. The ball is sent to the left and Mo’unga scores the fourth. 22-0

.00: CONVERSION! The first-five converts his second try. 24-0

The halftime score was Crusaders 24 Hurricanes ZERO

.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in New Zealand. Owen Franks is off for a breather, his job is done. Michael Alaalatoa replaces the All Black.

.00: Plumtree will have to have delivered a Churchillian speech to his team if the Hurricanes are to overturn this deficit.

.00: TRY! Scott Barrett barges his way over for his second score of the game. The ruck speed and short-runners are destroying the Canes. Game over! 29-0

.00: CONVERSION! Mo’unga makes no mistake. 31-0

.00: TRY! Lam breaks from his own half, slips a tackle and plays Matt Proctor on his inside shoulder. Proctor is tackled near the goal line, the Canes recycled the ball and Lam, at the base of the ruck, dots down. 31-5

.00: MISS! The kick is no good, but at least the visitors are on the board. 31-5

.00: The Crusaders win a lineout against the throw, they win a penalty after for offsides.

.00: The game is drifting, the crowd silent and the Canes, beaten.

.00: The crowd reverts to singing Sweet Caroline, bored with the ease at which their team has beaten their opposition in this derby.

.00: Jordie Barrett’s pass is poor, giving possession back to the Crusaders. Mitchell Drummond chases Havili’s kick, but the ball bounces safely into the hands of an opposition player.

.00: Robertson’s side has dropped off the pace since the interval: Who can blame them?

.00: TRY! Another series of penalties by the hosts lead to Wes Goosen’s score in the corner. It might be his first touch of the ball, this evening. 31-10

.00: MISS! Another kick sails wide. 31-10

.00: The game is winding down, but the Crusaders have an attack inside the Hurricanes’ 22.

.00: The Crusaders are camped inside the opposition’s half.

.00: TRY! Bridge gets in on the act after a good move from a lineout drive. 36-10

.00: CONVERSION! Mitchell Hunt, taking over from Mo’unga, adds the extras. 38-10

.00: TRY! A beautiful step and run by Jackson Garden-Bachop sets up Lam’s second try. 38-15

.00: MISS! Jordie Barrett’s drop-kick attempt is wide. 38-15

.00: the game continues after the siren because of a series of Crusaders’ penalty infringements.

.00: TRY! TJ Perenara scores against the post. The five-pointer denies the hosts a bonus-point, which could prove vital at the end of the regular season. 38-20

.00: CONVERSION! FINALLY, Jordie Barrett lands a kick. This time he calls for the tee. 38-22
