Dunedin based Super Rugby franchise the Highlanders will be captained through the 2017 Super Rugby season by Ash Dixon and Ben Smith.

The All Black fullback Ben Smith and Maori All Blacks skipper Ash Dixon will co-captain the side for the 2017 season.

Dixon comes in as co-captain replacing Shane Christie who wants to focus more on his playing duties.

Smith’s co-captaincy is his third in as many seasons with the highlight being in 2015 when he led the side to a Super Rugby title with No.8 Nasi Manu.

Highlanders head coach Tony Brown said that 28-year-old Hawke’s Bay Dixon was an obvious choice for the role.

Dixon will share the Highlanders hooking duties with All Black cap Liam Coltman and Auckland rake Greg Pleasants-Tate.
