Crusaders and Canterbury halfback is in doubt for the start of the 2017 Super Rugby season after breaking his leg in training.

Drummond broke his left fibula during a training run yesterday and has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Drummond will undergo an operation to insert a plate and screws, and then begin rehabilitating with the aim of returning to play in the early stages of the Super Rugby competition.

Canterbury Head Coach Scott Robertson said it was an upsetting blow for Drummond but he had no doubt he would be back to his best in 2017: “Mitch is playing some great rugby for us at the moment so it is disappointing for the team and obviously for Mitch to see him have his season so prematurely ended. ”

“But Mitch has a great attitude and work ethic so I know that he will bounce back from this injury and be back out on the field making a full contribution next year.”
