Cheetahs coach Rassie Erasmus has opted to leave two Springboks on the bench for his team’s opening Super 14 clash against the Bulls in Bloemfontein on Friday night.

Both Os Durandt and Gaffie du Toit have been named on the substitutes bench but Erasmus said not too much can be read into this as modern rugby has become a squad system.

He indicated that if persistent rain continues to fall in the city he may well revert to the experience and wet weather capabilities of Durandt ‘ a powerful scrummager ‘ and Du Toit ‘ a touchline kicking specialist.

‘I might still make some last minute changes due to the weather,’ said Erasmus at a press conference on Thursday. The Cheetahs have also opted for a relatively inexperienced hooker in Tiaan Liebenberg with Samoan hardman Trevor Leota on the bench.

There has been much speculation on which flyhalf Erasmus will select and he has gone for Springbok Meyer Bosman at the expense of Willem de Waal, who takes his place in the squad of 22. Springbok scrumhalf Michael Claasens will partner Bosman and their tussle with the Bull’s halfbacks will be crucial.

The Cheetahs backline will include Ronnie Cooke and Barry Goodes at centre while Eddie Fredericks will have the task of marking dangerman Bryan Habana. Juan Smith, the incumbent Springbok flanker will captain the side as they look to make an early impact on the competition.

Cheetahs:

Bevin Fortuin, Eddie Fredericks, Ronnie Cooke, Barry Goodes, Sinethemba Zweni, Meyer Bosman, Michael Claasens, Ryno van der Merwe, Juan Smith, Kamamba Floors, Barend Pieterse, Corniel van Zyl, Jannie du Plessis, Tiaan Liebenberg, Wian du Preez.

Replacements: Trevor Leota, Os Durandt, Ockie van Zyl, Frans Viljoen, Falie Oelshig, Willem de Waal, Gaffie du Toit.
