Western Force fullback Dane Haylett-Petty has played his way into contention for Wallabies selection in the three Test series against England next month according to his coach.

Force coach Michael Foley says that Haylett-Petty’s outstanding display in the loss to the Blues on Saturday will have caught Wallabies coach Michael Cheika’s eye.

Haylett-Petty was solid under the high ball and was one of the few Force players who threatened the Blues’ line whilst also demonstrating that he has a sound and defensive game.

Israel Folau’s recent move to the midfield has opened the door for another player to step in at 15 and Foley says that Haylett-Petty is now the most rounded full-back in Australian Super Rugby.

“Dane’s growth as a player has been outstanding,” Foley told the West Australian.

“Dane is the most complete 15 in Australia and the thing is, he is still getting better.”

“He could go out there now and play very good Test rugby.”

“I don’t think good form is ignored by Australian coaches and Dane has been in outstanding form through the season.

“He’s going to be right in the reckoning. As he applies himself he will get better. He will become Australia’s full-back.”

Should Cheika want to continue with Folau at 15 Foley says that Haylett-Petty could also play on the wing or even at outside centre.

“I’ve seen him play well in all those positions,” Foley said.

“I think he is fast enough for wing, but he can also play 13.”

The Australian squad to play England will be announced later this week.
