Perth based Super Rugby franchise the Western Force are expected to announce their new head coach on Wednesday this week.

The Force let their head coach Michael Foley go in June even though he had a year remaining on his contract and the Perth franchise have been looking for a replacement since then.

Foley’s Assistant coach Dave Wessels has been tipped for the new head coach position after he took charge of the team in their final three Super Rugby matches this season.

Wessels was Foley’s senior assistant for three years and although the Force lost all three of the matches under his leadership after the June break he has been shortlisted for the position on a full time basis.

At thirty-four Wessels would be the youngest Super Rugby head coach if he was appointed in the head coach position.

Other candidates for the position are former Force assistant John Mulvihill and former All Blacks back-rower Jonno Gibbes.

The Force won just two matches this season and last season they won three matches. In 2014 the Force won nine of their 16 matches and finished in 8th place.

The Force’s future is in serious doubt as after more than 10 years in Super Rugby they have never reached the play offs and this season the Australian Rugby Union were forced to step in and form an alliance to prevent the franchise from going under.

ARU Boss Bill Pulver has said that the Perth franchise are not in danger of being dropped from Super Rugby but a recent report suggested that Australia and South Africa could each lose a team with the Force being suggested as the Australian candidate to be cut.

Pulver said more recently that the ARU have not ruled out any options for reducing or expanding Super Rugby teams in the future.
