Chiefs utility forward Jono Gibbes has been named in the Chiefs playing 22 for Saturday morning’s Chiefs v Cats match in South Africa in Round Two of the 2006 Rebel Sport Super 14.

On-going foot injuries have kept the Chiefs captain out of rugby for the last five months. However, Gibbes is now fully recovered and will take a spot on the Chiefs reserves bench for this weekend’s match.

Chiefs coach Ian Foster says putting Gibbes on the bench is the best way for him to gain confidence after such a long spell off rugby. ‘No doubt Jono will be excited by the opportunity to play again,’ says Foster.

Bernie Upton and Kristian Ormsby will be the starting locks for the Chiefs, with Sean Hohneck being left out of the Chiefs mix for the Cats match. ‘We have been managing Sean’s knee strain since our Hurricanes preseason match. We felt it best not to force the issue with his knee this week.

With Jono now back in the mix, we could do this.’ In the backs, Jamie Nutbrown will get his first Chiefs start in the number nine jersey, ahead of Byron Kelleher who is named in the reserves.

‘Jamie has gone very well for us so far. Also don’t forget that Byron only joined the squad at the end of January and he is another player we don’t want to put too much on due to the physical way he plays his game.’

Mark Ranby is the only other change in the backline from last week, replacing the injured Niva Ta’auso at centre.

In the front row, experienced Chiefs prop Deacon Manu will start alongside captain Tom Willis and loosehead prop Simms Davison.

The Chiefs play the Cats at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday 18 February 5.00am (NZ time).
