Japan and Reds fullback Ayumu Goromaru is expected to leave the Queensland Super Rugby franchise at the end of the season to join French Top14 side Toulon.

Goromaru has had little game time since joining the Reds and has spent most of the season in the number 23 jersey which has had him coming on in the final minutes of matches if at all.

According to reports in Kyodo News the 30-year-old Test star is in final negotiations with Toulon and the deal could be announced by the end of the month.

Goromaru is one of the World’s highest paid players after his showing at the Rugby World Cup last year but has not been utilised fully by the Reds.

In recent weeks a groin injury for first-choice full-back Karmichael Hunt has seen Goromaru starting for the Reds and he is a chance to start against Japanese Super Rugby side the Sunwolves this weekend in Brisbane.

Goromaru played the full 80 minutes last week against the Hurricanes but Hunt is nearing a return to fitness and could come back into the side pushing the Japanese star on to the replacements bench or out of the squad altogether as has happened this season.

However given that the Queensland Rugby Union have sold thousands of jerseys and memberships to Japanese fans it would be wise move to include Goromaru in the match.
