The Highlanders kick off the weekend’s Super Rugby action in Dunedin when they host the Stormers from Cape Town South Africa.

Having gone through the first seven rounds of Super Rugby without a loss the Stormers have now suffered back to back losses. In contrast, the Highlanders had a wobbly start but they have now won four in a row.

The Cape side has won five of their last six against the Kiwi team but they have hit a bump in the road, losing their last two matches. Eben Etzebeth makes his 5oth Super Rugby appearance for the Stormers.

Siya Kolisi returning after being rested last week and will start at openside flank, with Nizaam Carr shifting to No.8 and Pieter-Steph du Toit continuing on the blindside.

The teams are out on the pitch and under the roof. Both teams like to run and have attacking quality all over the paddock.

Patrick Osborne, with tears in his eyes, leads the home team out in his 50th game for the Highlanders.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

BEEP! Referee Glen Jackson blows his whistle, time is on, and away we go.

2.00: The Highlanders are pinged early after a Stormers lineout. Robert du Preez kicks to touch and the Stormers have good field position, near the 22.

4.00: Dillyn Leyds knocks on and the hosts clear with a kick. Sp Marais collects the kick near his 5 on the touchline and passes to space where Leyds needs to be, not where he was, and so the ball does not travel forward. The winger’s kick is dropped into touch and Stormers ball.

5.00: The South Africans lose the ball with a careless error. Lineout to the home team and they attack. The Highlanders send the ball wide but, Liam Coltman drops Marty Banks’ short pass.

6.00: Scrum to the Stormers. Ben Smith is getting his ankle taped; it looked nasty when he got tackled and turned.

8.00: TRY Nizaam Carr! Wow! That is a Stormer’s special. SP Marais made the initial break, followed by Pieter-Steph du Toit. The Stormers shift wide and the skipper Kolisi fends off Ben Smith and offloads out the back door to the supporting Carr. The No 8 puts on the burners and goes over for the game’s opening try. Stunning!

9.00: Robert du Preez adds the extras; 7-0.

12.00: TRY Patrick Osborne! The Highlanders hit back through the winger. The home team pulled the Stormers apart, spreading the ball right then left. SP Marais jumped out of the line and missed Daniel Lienert-Brown, who popped to Dillon Hunt, who drew Leyds and sent Osborne away. Great hands by the forwards.

13.00: Marty Banks, cool as you like, slots the corner conversion. The scores are level.

16.00: The TMO is being consulted for foul play, but it looks like nothing. Penalty to the Highlanders. Good call by the ref not to show a card but, the penalty is harsh.

17.00: TRY Waisake Naholo! Ben Smith makes a mini break, Aaron Smith gets quick ball from under the posts and sends a long, double-skip pass to the winger, who cruises over in the corner. It all came from the harsh penalty against Olly Kebble.

18.00: Banks can’t add the conversion, but the hosts lead.

22.00: TRY Patrick Osborne! Rob Thompson collects a bouncing ball – from Du Preez’s up-and-under – and is not offside. Thompson is tackled but gets the ball away and Osborne has his second of the night.

23.00: Banks misses his second conversion attempt of the game.

24.00: Stormers take a quick-tap penalty and then, are awarded another penalty after Siosuia Halanukonuka tackles Oliver Kebble high. Du Preez calls for the tee.

25.00: Du Preez pushes his kick wide. The initial penalty was right in front of the sticks. Costly for the visitors.

28.00: The Stormers go wide and are pinged for a forward pass – harsh call on reflection; that looked straight, at best. Highlanders will have the put in near the touchline on the halfway line.

30.00: TRY Liam Squire! The penalties are mounting against the Cape side. Smith kicks to touch, the Highlanders set up a maul and drive over. Easy as you like. Tom Franklin took the lineout ball, set up the maul and Liam Coltman had the initial ball before shifting to his namesake.

31.00: Banks makes no mistake. The Stormers are all over the shop.

34.00: Banks kicks another penalty to touch; lineout to the hosts on the Stormers’ 5.

36.00: After sustained pressure by the home team, the visitors win two quick penalties and clear their lines. Robbie Fleck’s team is all over the place.

38.00: The Stormers lose the ball inside the Highlanders’ 22. The home team are flooding the ruck and it is paying off.

39.00: TRY Rob Thompson! Patty Osborne set that up. Osborne runs infield and is held up by Du Preez and Dan Kriel in the tackle. But, Osborne shows his strength, standing in the contact and hold the ball above his head, like in water polo, waits for support which comes from Thompson. The inside centre takes the ball on the angle, slips EW Viljoen’s tackle and runs in under the poles. Wow!

40.00: Banks adds an easy conversion, his third of the half.

41.00: BEEP! BEEP!

The halftime score was Highlanders 31 Stormers 7

The Stormers are losing the battle at the breakdown and getting beaten, far too easy, out wide. Robbie Fleck will need to address his team’s discipline which, since the Lions game, has been non-existent.

However, the Highlanders have been glorious; their handling, especially by the forwards, has been instrumental in two of their tries.

Stormers assistant coach Paul Feeney says his team need to make their tackles but be patient. He wants his team to “look after the ball more.”

41.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are back underway. The Stormers have never scored more than 24 points against the Highlanders in New Zealand.

44.00: NO TRY Pieter-Steph du Toit! Glen Jackson is calling for the TMO to check the grounding. It looks like the forward has lost it forward. It’s lost and the scrum is to the Highlanders.

46.00: A kick is charged down and the home side will have the lineout throw. The game has got a little scrappy.

48.00: The Stormers lose their throw but run the clearance back into the hosts’ half.

51.00: Eben Etzebeth leaves the field for a change of pants. He runs into the tunnel and does a quick swap.

53.00: The Stormers kick another penalty to touch. The visitors are predictable in just about everything they are doing.

55.00: TRY Waisake Naholo! It’s the Keystone Cops in Dunedin. The Stormers lose the ball on the Highlanders goal line and Rob Thompson kicks clear under pressure. Naholo chases the clearance and gets a kind bounce, which wrong-foots Robert du Preez, and the winger gets his second of the game.

56.00: Marty Banks adds the extras.

57.00: YELLOW CARD Aki Seiuli! The replacement is sent to the bin for a high tackle.

59.00: The game is opening up for the New Zealanders and the Stormers are wilting.

63.00: Aaron Smith makes a break, runs half the length of the field and, instead of giving the pass to Gareth Evans, he passes to Thompson, and the move is over. The Stormers carry the ball over and the hosts will have the 5-metre scrum.

65.00: TRY Dillon Hunt! Aaron Smith takes a quick-tap penalty and passes to Hunt, on the wing, and the flanker gets in on the act. It’s a rout.

66.00: Banks, with another touchline conversion, piles on the pain.

71.00: TRY Greg Pleasants-Tate! The big man drives over from close range after some sustained pressure on the Stormers’ try-line.

72.00: Fletcher Smith takes over kicking duties and can’t miss from under the sticks.

74.00: TRY Dewaldt Duvenage! The Stormers wheel a 5-metre scrum, the scrumhalf breaks to his left and sells Kayne Hammington a little dummy, cuts inside and scores.

75.00: Du Preez adds the extras.

77.00: The game is winding down; three of the Highlanders’ players have made the most tackles, this despite having most of the ball.

80.00: TRY Matt Faddes! The Highlanders dance their way from deep and add insult to injury, as they rack up a record win in Otago.

81.00: Paddy Osborne misses the conversion.

BEEP! BEEP!
