Current Super Rugby champions the Hurricanes host the British & Irish Lions in Wellington on Tuesday in the final midweek match of the 2017 Lions tour.

This will be interesting as the tour is over for many of the Lions’ players: can they pick themselves up for this game in the Cake Tin?

The tourists have lost two of their four matches against the New Zealand Super Rugby franchises.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

1.00: BEEP! BEEP! Dan Biggar gets the last mid-week tour game underway at the Cake Tin in Wellington. There has been a late change to the Lions’ bench; Leigh Halfpenny comes in for Jared Payne, who has been having headaches, so was left out as a precaution.

4.00: Greig Laidlaw knocks on at the base of the ruck. Earlier, the Lions won a free-kick for an early engagement at the scrum. The Hurricanes go to the short-side, put in a kick and Jack Nowell saves the day. The ball is cleared downfield and the home team lose the ball forward. Scrum to the Lions.

6.00: Romain Poite is the referee tonight, so expect lots of resets and penalties at the set piece. The Hurricanes bulldoze the Lions’ pack but concede a penalty. A scuffle breaks out, but it’s nothing really.

9.00: The Lions win a penalty after a messy lineout drive by the tourists. Biggar will kick at goal from in front of the posts.

10.00: PENALTY! Dan Biggar puts the Lions on the board: 0-3.

12.00: Jordie Barrett is penalised for a high tackle which was not that high. Hmm? The Lions take it quickly and it’s another penalty for offsides. That’s the fifth in a row, excluding the free-kick to zero.

14.00: Sam Lousi and Ben May hold up the Lions’ attacker in the maul and win the turnover. Superb from the two forwards. They go to Ngani Laumape from the scrum and are punching the ball through midfield.

16.00: Finally! The Frenchman awards the Canes a penalty for offsides. Wow! The ball is cleared to halfway. They go wide through Barrett and Julian Savea. The Lions are reeling under the pressure but…

18.00: TRY Tommy Seymour! Laidlaw intercepts inside his 22, runs deep into the Kiwis half and offloads to the supporting Seymour who runs in to score his second try of the tour. It’s a one-two punch by the lesser spotted Scots: 0-8.

19.00: Biggar slots the kick to make it 0-10.

20.00: The Hurricanes come again after Nehe Milner-Skudder’s grubber behind the defenders. Laidlaw clears from the ruck. It’s all Lions at the moment after winning another turnover. Joe Marler is having a beast of a game as a ball carrier.

21.00: Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi is penalised for tackling Jonathan Joseph in the air and the Lions get the penalty. Biggar will kick from near the halfway line.

23.00: PENALTY! Biggar slots another penalty: 0-13.

24.00: George North has moved to second five eight, Halfpenny goes to the left wing and immediately, from the lineout, Laumape ghosts through the gap between the new Biggar/North pairing. Halfpenny goes to fullback now, and Nowell to the right wing. Robbie Henshaw is off.

28.00: TRY Callum Gibbons! The Hurricanes go 10 phases before the lock dodges the ref and crashes over from close range. It all came from Luamapi’s break in midfield in the previous series of play: 5-13.

30.00: Barrett adds the conversion: 7-13.

31.00: May is penalised for obstruction. The crowd is not happy with this performance by the Frenchman, but it’s the right call. Biggar will have an easy kick here inside the Canes’ 22.

32.00: PENALTY! Biggar: 7-16.

34.00: The Hurricanes lose the ball in the tackle – again. All the Lions’ players were offsides after Halfpenny slipped in the act of kicking. Dubious call by Poite. Laidlaw puts a bomb up, the Lions regain the ball and Savea is penalised for not releasing. Biggar kicks deep, but Otere Black keeps the ball in play. Barrett clears and the visitors come again. This game is frenetic.

37.00: TRY George North! Biggar puts in a huge bomb, Halfpenny competes with Milner-Skudder and North gathers the loose ball to score under the posts after taking Iain Henderson’s pass. It came from Barrett not finding touch: 7-21.

38.00: Biggar adds the two points: 7-23.

40.00: The Lions concede a penalty at the ruck, the Canes go through several phases before being called back. Barrett puts it out near the corner. The home team have one last chance before the break.

42.00: another penalty, this time against Dan Cole. Replay another lineout. The Lions repel the onslaught and win the turnover after holding up the driving maul. Great D by the tourists.

The half-time score was Hurricanes 7 British & Irish Lions 23

41.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are back underway in the second-half.

42.00: TRY Ngani Laumape! Sensational by the Hurricanes, who have come out firing. Jordie Barrett takes a high ball, the Kiwis go wide, Vince Aso throws a beautiful, no-look inside ball to Julian Savea. The ‘Bus’ breaks into the 22 and sends the ball to Luamape, who barges over a Dan Biggar. Wow! 12-23.

43.00: Barrett slot the sidelines-line conversion: 14-23.

45.00: The Hurricanes win a scrum penalty and will attempt a rare shot at a penalty goal.

46.00: MISS! The ball just goes wide of the left-hand upright: 14-23.

47.00: Halfpenny is pinged for a professional foul, but is not carded. Tommy Seymour had started the attack with a chip-chase and regather.

49.00: The Hurricanes are dazzling, taking the ball through multiple phases. The Lions have given away two cynical penalties and keep throwing the ball away. Another scuffle breaks out because of the Lions throwing the ball away. Brad Shields tells the ref that that is why they are getting “frustrated”. North is pinged for offsides and Barrett calls for the tee.

50.00: PENALTY! Barrett slots the three-pointer: 17-23.

52.00: YELLOW CARD! Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi is off for a high tackle. Biggar will kick.

53.00: PENALTY! Biggar extends his team’s lead: 17-26.

54.00: The Lions have all the momentum and have come roaring back. Iain Henderson has been immense, making two barnstorming runs up the field, setting up the field position for the previous penalty and now he looks to have scored. TMO is required. No try. Scrum on the five-metres line to the Lions.

55.00: TRY Tommy Seymour! That’s the Scots’ second of the night and he is now the top try-scorer overtaking penalty tries. The Lions send the ball wide and use their extra man advantage: 17-31.

56.00: The conversion is wide: 17-31.

58.00: A rare break in play since half-time as the two teams catch their breath.

60.00: We are entering the final quarter and the Kiwis have all the ball, going through several phases as they enter the Lions’ half. Biggar cleans up at the back after a break by Barrett. The Lions win another penalty.

63.00: North goes over for the score, but his foot is in touch.

65.00: The TMO is called for a dangerous tackle by Jonathan Joseph and Iain Henderson. This could be a red, but the French ref, who is not having a good game, had to be told by George Ayoub, to look again. Ridiculous!

66.00: YELLOW CARD! Iain Henderson is sent to the bin for 10 minutes.

67.00: TRY Wes Goosen! The Hurricanes pounded the Lions’ try-line, going 10 phases before Barrett throws a long skip-pass to Goosen, who runs around to score near the poles: 22-31.

68.00: Barrett slots the kick and it’s a one-score game: 24-31.

71.00: TRY Vaea Fifita! Stunning! The Hurricanes go through another set of phases near the goal-line and the flanker dives over from close range. The Lions are reeling: 29-31.

71.00: Barrett levels the score: 31-31.

73.00: It’s all Hurricanes and Leigh Halfpenny knocks on a simple catch. Oh dear! The Lions are wilting under the strain of pressure coming from the Canes and their supporters. Scrum on the halfway, in centre field.

75.00: The Canes have the ball and have gone a dozen phases. Barrett goes wide but the Lions are holding their hosts out.

77.00: The pressure is intense. After 23 phases the ball is lost forward and the Lions hang on. Henderson is back on the field. The ball looked to be kicked forwards. George Ayoub is back in the game. The penalty is against Luamape for a neck roll in the build up. Strange that.

79.00: Wow. The Hurricanes win the turnover inside their 22 and will have a scrum.

80.00: The hooter sounds and the Canes attack, but the Lions win the ball back and are near the Canes’ 22. Biggar has dropped back into the pocket, takes aim and blasts a drop goal, but the ball drops under the crossbar. Game over.
