Hurricanes beat Crusaders in Wellington

2016 Super Rugby champions the Hurricanes host the current Super Rugby champions the Crusaders in the first match on Saturday.

The Hurricanes have played the Crusaders 32 times in Super Rugby since 1996 and the Hurricanes have won 11, matches lost 18 and drawn three.

  • The Hurricanes have won seven of their last 10 games against the Crusaders, though only two of those 10 games were decided by double-digit margins.
  • The Hurricanes have won their last four games at home against the Crusaders, previously they had won just two of 10 home games against them (D2, L6).
  • The Crusaders will be looking to avoid back to back losses on the road in the regular season for the first time since May 2015.
  • The Hurricanes have conceded just 15 points per game this campaign, the fewest of any team; the Rebels (18pts) are the only other team to have conceded fewer than 20 points per game.
  • Julian Savea beat seven defenders last round, the equal second most of any player; the last time he made more in a single game was in Round 2, 2017 against the Rebels (8).

Mitch Hunt kicks off and the match is underway.

1.00: Scott Barrett tackles high so the Hurricanes have an early penalty. They kick for touch and the line out.

3.00: the Hurricanes win the line out. Julian Savea has a run but is caught. He recycles and the Hurricanes start working the ball through phase after phase. Ryan Crotty takes a knock but the game continues. The Hurrricanes give the Crusaders a big test in defence but they hold on. Crotty comes off for a HIA – Manasa Mataele comes on. The Hurricanes have a penalty and take the line out.

5.00: The Hurricanes win the line out and Chris Eves slips through and scores. TRY !Barrett adds the conversion.

7.00:The Hurricanes go on the attack again. The Crusaders concede their fourth penalty. The match doctor says Sam Whitelock has to come off for a HIA (head injury assessment) – there have been some massive hits so far. The Hurricanes take the line out.

8.00: The Hurricanes win the line out, Barrett uses his pace but the Crusaders stop him. The Hurricanes continue the attack but run out of options so they chip the ball through and the ball is touched down behind the line.

9.00: The Crusaders restart and kick deep. They chase the ball and concede their fifth penalty. Crotty is not coming back on from the HIA. Jordie Barrett will have a shot at goal.

10.00: Barrett takes the kick but misses.

12.00: The Hurricanes go through the phases, Jordie Barrett slices through the Crusaders but is stopped short of the line. The ball is popped back and TJ Perenara gathers the ball and scores. TRY! As the try is scored we learn that Sam Whitelock will also not be returning. So that is Crotty and Whitelock failing HIA and the Crusaders are two tries down.

13.00: Barrett adds the conversion.

16.00: The Crusaders win a penalty from the scrum. They choose the line out even though it is in front and kickable.

18..00: The Crusaders win the line out but the ball is turned over and then goes dead. The Hurricanes get the put in.

21.00: The Crusaders win the scrum and start to build their attack in the Hurricanes 22. The Hurricanes turn the ball over and pass it out wide to Ben Lam, he is chased by David Havili and  Jack Goodhue but he beats both and scores TRY!

23.00: Beauden Barrett takes the conversion – he nails it.

27.00: Penalty to the Crusaders for an early tackle. The Crusaders take the line out and kick for the corner. The Line out is not straight. It’s all going wrong for the Crusaders. Hurricanes scrum.

29.00: The Crusaders strike out of nothing. The Crusaders have the ball but nothing looks to be on. Codie Taylor makes some ground but offloads to Manasa Mataele who powers through four tackles and scores. TRY! 

31;00: Mitchell Hunt misses the conversion.

32.00: The Crusaders try to clear the ball but Hunt’s clearance kick is sharged down and Matt Proctor gathers the ball and scores. TRY! Just like that the Hurricanes are back on it.

33.00: Barrett misses the conversion.

36.00: The Crusaders win a line out. They drive the ball towards the line and Jordan Taufua scores. TRY! 

38.00: Hunt curls the conversion in. Hurricanes lead by 14.

40.05: The siren sounds for half time but we have time for a scrum. The Crusaders win the scrum. They spread the ball wide but then come back to the middle. The ball goes back to the wing where Mataele knocks on.

It’s half time.

41.00: Barrett kicks off and the second half is underway. The Hurricanes knock on after the restart so the Crusaders have a scrum.

42.00: The Crusaders pass the ball but Chris Eves intercepts and races away. He is caught and the Crusaders manage to secure the ball. Wyatt Crockett has taken a knock. He may have to come off as well.

43.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum on the 5m line. The ball gets chipped through but everyone is called back for a penalty – not releasing. Barrett kicks for touch – 5m line out.

44.00: The Crusaders let the Hurricanes win the line out but then the Crusaders win a penalty. The Crusaders do however get a warning that penalties could be reversed. The Crusaders clear the ball.

49.00: The Crusaders have replaced half back Bryn Hall for Mitch Drummmond. Crockett has been replaced by Chris King.

50.000: The Crusaders win a penalty from the scrum and kick for touch.

52.00: The Crusaders win the line out and work the ball to the 5m line. They get pressed back and win a penalty for no arms tackle against Chris Eves. The Crusaders kick to the corner for the line out.

54.00: the Crusaders grind the ball forward. They get to the posts and may have scored by touching the ball against the post. The TMO is called in to review. It’s a TRY for Michael Alaalatoa.

55.00: Hunt adds the conversion. Codie Taylor has been replaced.

56.00 : Vince Aso comes on for Julian Savea. Jordie Barrett takes a high ball passes the ball back but his knee is in touch which gives the Crusaders a line out.

60.00: The second half has been all the Crusaders. They win a penalty for a high tackle. Hunt kicks for touch and the line out. The Hurricanes replace Sam Lousi for Michael Fatialofa.

61.00: Ben Funnell messes up the line out. Hurricanes scrum.

64.00: The Hurricanes get the ball and drive it into the Crusaders half. They test the Crusaders but then the ball is turned over and kicked back to the half way line by the Crusaders.

66.00: Penalty to the Hurricanes. Jordie Barrett takes the penalty kick and nails it. Hurricanes lead by 10.

71.00: The Crusaders are upping their intensity. They are putting the Hurricanes under some pressure in their half.

72.00: The Crusaders try the rolling maul but it goes to ground and the Hurricanes win the put in.

75.00: The Crusaders try to press forward but Luke Romano loses the ball in the tackle.

78.00: The Hurricanes have the momentum back. They are pushing back at the Crusaders.

79.00: The Hurricanes win a line out but then after they go on the run the Crusaders win a penalty. The siren sounds. The Crusaders have a scrum.

80.00: Scrum penalty to the Hurricanes. They kick for touch and take the line out.

81.00: Hurricanes win the line out. They go through a couple of phases and then win another penalty.

82.00: The Hurricanes take the penalty quickly and tap it. The go through 6 phases on the Crusaders 5m line. 8 phases. 9 and then a penalty.

83.00: The Hurrricanes take a 5 scrum.

85.00: The Crusaders win a penalty from the scrum so they kick for touch and take the line out. The Hurricanes get the ball but there is a knock on – thats it.

The Hurricanes have won.
