Chiefs beat Crusaders in Christchurch

Two former champions in the Crusaders and the Chiefs will meet in the second New Zealand Super Rugby derby match in the opening round.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The match is underway.

2.00: The Crusaders win a penalty from an early scrum. Hiroshi Yamashita is penalised. Richie Mo’ungan takes the kick and nails it. Cruisaders lead.

5.00: Crusaders win their line out and kick the ball high. The Chiefs get the ball and boot it back and find touch on the other side. Neither side makes much ground.

8.00: Both sides preferring to use the boot and kick instead of running the ball at this stage of the match. The game is paused while Brodie Retalick gets a new contact lense fitted.

10.00: The Crusaders run the ball but Kieran Read knocks on. The Chiefs win a penalty from the scrum. Cruden kicks for touch.

12.00: The Chiefs go through 7 phases on attack in the Crusaders half. The attack finishes with a forward pass from the Chiefs.

14.00: The match is a little tense as the passion and handbags come out. It settles down.

15.00: Handling errors : Crusaders 2 Chiefs 2

19.00: The Crusaders get a clean break through the Chiefs defence as Kieran Fonotia sells a dummy. They get stopped but then win a penalty. However we have a TMO review. Tom Sanders is given a warning for taking Kieran Read out without the ball. The Crusaders kick for the corner.

21.00: The Crusaders win another penalty after the line out. Richie Mo’unga takes the penalty kick. He nails it extending the lead.

27.00: The Chiefs win a scrum and pass out to Shaun Stevenson who comes in at pace but the Crusaders stop him. The Chiefs continue the attack down the opposite wing but the ball goes into touch.

30.00: Penalty to the Chiefs. Damian McKenzie takes the kick from the half way line. He nails it.

32.00: The Crusaders have to get back for a territory kick from the Chiefs. The bounce is not friendly and David Havili gets the ball but Shaun Stevenson comes in rips the ball off him and scores the opening TRY!

34.00: The conversion is missed but the Chiefs lead.

38.00: The Crusaders scrum powers over the Chiefs scrum, Read picks up the ball, offloads to Mo’unga who races for the line and scores. TRY! Crusaders scrum destroyed the Chiefs scrum there.

39.00: Mo’unga converts his try and the Crusaders lead again.

40.00: The whistle sounds, the ball goes into touch and its half time.

The Chiefs kick off and the second half is underway.

43.000: Chiefs doing most of the playing so far this half. They are going through the phases as the Crusaders have to defend.

45.00: The Chiefs attacks pay off as Seta Tamanivalu crashes over for the TRY.

46.00  McKenzie slots the conversion and the Chiefs are back in front.

49.00: The Crusaders look to hit back and they go for the corner but Damien McKenzie shoulders Nemani Nadolo into touch. Little guy on big guy but the little guy won. Meanwhile, Shaun Stevenson has gone off holding his shoulder.

50.00: The Crusaders keep the pressure on the Chiefs and they stretch the Chiefs defence as David Havili sells a dummy and snipes in for the line. TRY!

51.00: Mo’unga slices the conversion. Crusaders lead.

57.00: Both teams start bringing on their benches as players start to run out of puff. Penalty from the scrum to the Crusaders. They kick for touch.

60.00: The Crusaders win another penalty. Mo’unga takes the shot from in front but outside the 22. He misses.

63.00: Charlie Ngatai almost splits the Crusaders defence but then he is called back for obstruction. Penalty to the Crusaders. Mo’unga slots the penalty.

65.00: The Chiefs work the ball into the Crusaders 22 by going through the phases. Damien McKenzie gets the ball at short range and at pace and he crashes over to score. TRY.

67.00:McKenzie converts his own try. Chiefs lead.

68.00: There is a break in play as Reed Prinsep has been knocked out cold after a clash of heads. Leon Fukofuka will come on.

75.00: The Chiefs continue to play at a high tempo against the Crusaders who are hanging on defensively. Wave after wave of attack. Sam Cane is stopped just short of the line. The Chiefs do however get a penalty.

76.00: The Chiefs kick for touch and the line out. They win the line out and drive over the line and this time Sam Cane does score. TRY!

78.00: McKenzie misses the conversion.

79.00: The Chiefs win the ball back and wind the clock down.

80.00: Time runs out and the Chiefs win.
