Hurricanes beat Highlanders in Wellington

The first match in Super Rugby Round 14 this weekend is in Wellington where the Hurricanes host the Highlanders at Westpac Stadium.

The teams are coming on to the field. It’s wet and raining. Not much wind though.

The Hurricanes kick off and we are underway.

2.00: The Highlanders hold on to the ball for the first minute. Patrick Osborne chips the ball away. The ball goes from side to side as they take turns in kicking it away. The long opening sequence ends with a penalty for leaving the feet by the Hurricanes. Lima Sopoaga kicks for touch.

4.00: The Highlanders win another penalty at the line out. Sopoaga takes the kick and misses from just inside the half.

5.00: The Hurricanes make a mess of the restart which gives the Highlanders a scrum on the Hurricanes 22 as it didn’t go over the line.  The scrum has to be reset. Twice. Wet weather making it hard to get a footing.

7.00: The Highlanders get the ball but the Hurricanes press them back and then the ball is lost forward.

8.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum. They run it and then Barrett kicks upfield. Osborne gets to the ball and it is taken into touch.

9.00: The Highlanders come away with the ball from the line out and attack on the Hurricanes 22.

10.00: The Highlanders can’t get through the Hurricanes defence but then the Hurricanes knock as they try to steal the ball. Dane Coles is getting a little frustrated with the referee. The scrum has to be reset. Coles gets a talking to.

12.00: The Highlanders win the scrum but the final pass goes to ground and rolls into touch.

13.00: The Highlanders break out from their half. Cory Jane and TJ Perenara make huge ground and then the ball gets to Ardie Savea from Brad Shields who races in to score untouched. The TMO checks. The TRY is awarded.

14.00: Beauden Barrett slots the conversion.

16.00:Lots of loose play near the half way line. Wobbly kicks and dodgy passes everything going on but no one making ground. A foot goes into touch but the teams are called back for a knock on. The Hurricanes win the scrum and kick upfield.

17.00: The Highlanders boot the ball back and the Hurricanes counter until they infringe. The Highlanders get a penalty and Sopoaga kicks for touch.

18.00: The Hurricanes win the line out on the Highlanders throw. They attack in the Highlanders half. Barrett tries the up and under but the Highlanders make the mark and then kick upfield. The Hurricanes begin the counter attack.

20.00: After an extended period on attack Vince Aso gets away for the Hurricanes. The ball goes to ground in the tackle and the Huriricanes go over the line but get held up.

22.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum. They pass the ball back inside and then go wide again and Brad Shields goes over and scores. TRY!

23.00: Barrett adds the conversion.  The first 10 minutes was all the Highlanders but they have fallen apart now.

25.00: The Highlanders look to hit back and they work the ball into the Hurricanes 22. Theball is knocked forward by the Hurricanes who try to counter but get called back. Patrick Osborne is down having taken a knock.

26.00: The Highlanders win the scrum, Malakai Fekitoa bashes through the Hurricanes and Osborne follows up. The ball gets to Lima Sopoaga who runs for Victor Vito and crashes over and scores. TRY!

28.00: Sopoaga adds the conversion.

31.00: The Highlanders get pinged for standing up in the scrum. Barrett kicks high and Patrick Osborne knocks the ball on and the Hurricanes have the advantage. The ball is then taken into touch. The Highlanders win the line out. They kick upfield and Faddes gets to the ball, the ball is recycled and Osborne continues the attack until the Hurricanes turn it over and kick it into touch. The original kick was done by Sopoaga facing backwards and over his head. Very strange. See it HERE.

34.00: The Hurricanes win the line out and Barrett races ahead to chase a kick. He can’t control the ball and Naholo gets it and boots it into touch.

36.00: The Highlanders steal the line out but Smith’s box kick goes out on the full. The Hurricanes win the line out and attack. The ball is knocked on but the Hurricanes have a penalty.

37.00: Someone threw a punch and everyone gets upset about it. Barrett slots the penalty.

39.00: The teams kick the ball back and forward and then Cory Jane gets the ball. The siren sounds so he kicks it into touch. It’s half time.

40.00: The Highlanders kick off and the second half is underway. No changes for either side at the break.

41:00: The Highlanders get the perfect start as Tom Franklin charges down a Perenara kick. The Highlanders win a scrum and Daniel Lienert-Brown dives over and scores. TRY!

43.00: Sopoaga takes the conversion kick and nails it.

46.00: The Highlanders win a line out on their throw in inside their half. They do however get pushed back a little and the ball goes dead. The Hurricanes get the put in.

48.00: Perenara chips the ball through to chase but three Highlanders get back and secure the ball and dot it down. Sopoaga restarts.

51.00: Penalty to the Highlanders. Lima Sopoaga takes the kick he nails it and the scores are level.

54.00: The Hurricanes pout the Highlanders under pressure in their 22. The Highlanders sustain the pressure and then kick the ball upfield.

56.00: The Hurricanes get the ball and begin the counter attack. They go through 9 phases recycling the ball. 10 phases. 11 and into the 22. Penalty to the Hurricanes.

58.00: Beauden Barrett slots the penalty and the Hurricanes lead again. Marty Banks has come on for the Highlanders at 10.

62.00: Penalty to the Highlanders. Banks takes the kick and levels the scores.

66.00: The game has slowed a lot as neither team want to lose it. It’s an armwrestle.

69.00: The Hurricanes have the ball on attack. They make several breaks but they still can’t get though. 18 phases.

70.00: After 19 phases the Highlanders win a penalty. Banks kicks for touch.

71.00: The Hurricanes force the Highlanders into touch with the ball in the Highlanders 22. The Canes win the line out, they use the maul. They win a penalty.

74.00: Barett takes the kick but misses.

75.00: The Hurricanes have a scrum. They win the scrum and put the Highlanders under pressure but again they can’t get through.

78.00: The Hurricanes win a scrum 5 out. They drive to the line and then go over but get held up.

79.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum. They run the ball but the Highlanders read it. The Hurricanes recycle and Ardie Savea slips through and scores. TRY!

80.00: Barrett adds the conversion and the Hurricanes have won.
