Match number 6 in the 2011 Super Rugby tournament is another South African conference clash and is between the Lions and the Bulls at Coca Cola Park in Johannesburg.

Lions vs Bulls

Much has been made of the Lions after their Currie Cup resurgence under new coach John Mitchell and many of their fans have declared that they are back even though they have actually done very little in the way of winning first class matches.

The Lions record for the Super 14 was nothing short of awful. They became the first team to go through a whole Super 14 rugby season without winning a match and as they lost their last match in 2009 the Lions are on a losing streak that stretches to 14 matches.

Lions rugby wasn’t too rosy before this losing streak either as in their last 25 matches they have won just three. Against the Bulls the Lions have lost their last five matches.

Historically the Lions and Bulls have met 13 times and the Bulls have won 8 and the Lions 5 times. On average when the Lions meet the Bulls the Lions score 26 points and the Bulls score 32 points.

The Bulls warm ups weren’t terribly impressive but they were only warm ups. Conversely the Lions enjoyed a good warm up series but again there are only warm ups.

There was doubt over a couple of Bulls players but they have come through and the team has been strengthened by the return of Zane Kirchner, Fourie du Preez and Victor Matfield.

The Bulls therefore had the luxury of being able to select the team that played in last year’s Super 14 final but decided to bring in new signing Bjorn Basson on the wing. The team has well over 1000 Super rugby caps and as well know this team knows how to win matches.

The Bookies have given the Lions a 12 point start for this match – Bet £10 get and £20. We tend to agree and think that the Bulls won’t be troubled by the Lions too much and the Bulls will win by 14.
