Western Province director of rugby Nick Mallett is in talks with former WP prop Pat Barnard, in a bid to bring him back to Cape Town.

Barnard, who was a South African under 21 star, left for Northampton during the Gert Smal era at Newlands, after he was made an offer during a spell in which he was not receiving any game time.

Barnard, who qualifies to be selected for England, is in the midst of recovering from a calf injury, whilst Northampton has just been relegated from the Premier division in English club rugby.

“We would like to bring Pat back and we have been in touch with him,” Mallett told Die Burger on Thursday. “He is a high-class prop.”

Barnard, however, remains on contract with his English club.

Barnard would like to be released from his contract.

“It’s not about the money. I want to play at the highest level,” he said. “The Cape is a wonderful place, and I miss it.”

Meanwhile WP coach Kobus van der Merwe has garnered the services of former Province and Springbok tighthead Cobus Visagie.

Visagie is on holiday in Cape Town, and has extended his contract with Saracens of England.

His assistance with the WP scrum will thus only be a short-term plan.

“We cannot overlook his experience when it is at our disposal,” Van der Merwe said.
