Canberra Super Rugby franchise the Brumbies have announced that Dan McKellar will take over from Stephen Larkham as Super Rugby head coach in 2018 when Larkham takes up his full-time duties with the Wallabies.

McKellar first arrived at the club as Defence Coach in 2013 and has since been Head Coach of the UC Vikings as well as becoming Assistant Coach to Larkham with the Super Rugby franchise.

“I am feel honoured and privileged to be taking over as Head Coach of this fantastic club,” McKellar commented.

“It’s a wonderful club to be part of and I am looking forward to helping shape the future of the Brumbies, on and off the field.

“Having worked with Stephen for several years, and been part of the Brumbies set-up since 2013, I am confident that we have some exciting times ahead of us. We have lots of young talent at the club and are in the process of looking to consolidate our playing resources for next season.

“Working with CEO Michael Thomson, and GM Professional Rugby & Pathways, Damien Hill, we are already preparing for the 2018 season in terms of new acquisitions that will help keep the Brumbies at the forefront of Australian Rugby.”

Brumbies CEO Michael Thomson was delighted with the appointment of McKellar to the role.

“The appointment of Dan as new Head Coach of the Brumbies is part of a long-term strategic approach,” he commented.

“By promoting from within, we are ensuring continuity amongst our coaching staff and in Dan we have appointed a coach who is well versed in the traditions and heritage of Brumbies Rugby.

“Dan has excellent pedigree as a Coach and understands the Canberra rugby community at all levels. His ability to communicate and lead effectively are two of his many strengths and we look forward to a prosperous future at the club.

“We had an excellent list of candidates that applied for the role but Dan’s application stood out and we are delighted he has accepted the offer”

McKellar, a former loosehead prop, featured in more than 150 first grade games for Souths Rugby Club in Brisbane, and was a member of the Queensland Reds team for the 2005/06 Super Rugby season. He also played club rugby in Scotland and Ireland.

As a Coach, he began his career at Souths and, following four years in the job, he made the move to Canberra to join the Tuggeranong Vikings in the local John I Dent Cup competition winning Premierships in 2011 and 2012 and forging the highly successful academy that has become a pathway for aspiring rugby talent.

“As a player it’s fantastic to have the continuity to coaching that Dan will bring,” club Captain Sam Carter commented.

“As a playing group we are accustomed to Dan’s way of coaching, which is in the finest of Brumbies traditions, and personally I am looking forward to working with Dan to help build a successful club that is a focal point of the local community.”
