The Natal Sharks host the Lions in an Absa Currie Cup fixture at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Saturday, renewing an intense rivalry between two very proud rugby Provinces. The match kicks off at 17h00 and will be screened live on SuperSport 1 and M-Net.

The Sharks and the Lions were dominant in the Absa Currie Cup in the early nineties and have maintained high levels of consistency in recent years. Over the past fifteen seasons since 1990, the two have contested four Absa Currie Cup finals – each winning two. During the same period at least one of the two has played in the Absa Currie Cup Final in every season except for 1997, 1998 and 2004. The last time they met in a Final was in Durban in 1999 where the Lions won 32 – 9.

Absa Currie Cup tradition runs deep, and clashes between these two are always hard to predict and never failing to deliver a fair share of surprises

In their last 10 Absa Currie Cup meetings since 1999, the Lions have won six – four of these in Johannesburg and two in Durban – and the Sharks have won four, all of them at home.

Ironically, in their four Absa Currie Cup final meetings, the away team has always won.

The teams shared the spoils last season, each winning their home game, whilst the Lions won the home and away meetings in 2003. The Lions won when the teams only met once during the 2002 season and the Sharks got a “double” in 2001, one of the matches being a 16 – 9 semi-final win.

The teams go into Saturday’s clash unbeaten with the Sharks getting wins over two of the Absa-sponsored teams, Boland Cavaliers and the Eagles in their opening two matches, and the Lions winning against the AMD Valke, Boland Cavaliers and the Eagles to top the standings in Section X.

On the basis of their performances to date the Lions go into the match as favourites. Home advantage will be critical though and the fantastic Absa Currie Cup pedigree of both sides should ensure that this is another memorable encounter between the Sharks and the Lions.
