Wales assistant coach Shaun Edwards has revealed that he nearly quit rugby union and moved to Australia after missing out on a place in the coaching staff for the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour Down Under.

Edwards' expertise as defense coach for Wales helped it retain the Six Nations with a 30-3 win over England on Saturday, but he was almost not there to enjoy it.

After being overlooked by Lions coach Warren Gatland - his close friend - for the Australia tour, Edwards says in his Guardian column he was in a "dark place" and thought about "going back to (rugby) league ... to re-learn my trade as an assistant coach with the ARL."

Edwards has become one of the most respected northern-hemisphere coaches since leaving rugby league to join the 15-man code.
