Former Wallabies Rugby World Cup winner Michael Lynagh is set to be released from a Brisbane hospital two weeks after suffering a stroke.

The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital has released a statement saying the 48-year-old Lynagh is due to be released Wednesday.

A key member of Australia's 1991 World Cup winning team, Lynagh was visiting from London when he started complaining of headaches and blurred vision while having dinner with friends.

Lynagh's neurologist Rob Henderson said the former Wallabies captain spent time in the hospital's intensive care unit and had suffered a cerebellar and occipital lobe stroke that affected his vision, coordination and balance.

Lynagh played 72 tests and had the world test points record of 911 when he retired after the 1995 World Cup.
