Blues captain Keven Mealamu has admitted that an out of shape Piri Weepu let the Blues down this Super Rugby season.
Weepu started the season overweight and unfit and has not been given too much game time in the Blues disastrous start to their campaign.
Mealamu said that the Blues need a fit Piri Weepu in the team and not in the shape he is in now.
"He's a player that we can definitely do without though," Mealamu told Radio Sport.
"He's probably not in the top condition that he's been in in his career and that's what we really need from him, to be at that top fitness level."
Mealamu said that Weepu himself is most disappointed that he has not been able to contribute to the team as much as he would have liked to.
"If he'd turned up in better condition then he'd be able to contribute more to us."
"That's something he's going to have to look at, we're going to have to look at as well."
"We're all professionals here, we should never have to turn up in that sort of shape."
Worryingly for the Blues captain Mealamu admitted that he had lost his own confidence after such a poor start to the season for the Blues.
