Reds back Mike Harris wants to use Friday's Super Rugby match against the Blues as an opportunity to show them what they missed out on.

The Blues let Harris leave them in 2010 which allowed him to move to the Reds and now he wants to show Auckland what kind of player they could have had.

Harris is close to earning a Wallabies call up now that James O'Connor and Ben Tapuai will both miss at least the start of the June Tests which could open the way for Harris into the international stage.

Harris needs to impress over the next five Super Rugby matches so that he overtake Brumbies inside centre Pat McCabe in the pecking order.

His radar-like kicking boot will no doubt help him especially since regular kickers Quade Cooper and James O'Connor are in doubt.

Harris is however getting ahead of himself and knows that immediately the only thing that matters is his performance against the Blues this weekend.

"Like any player, there's some extra meaning going against the team where you come from," Harris told the Courier Mail.

"It's pretty exciting to be honest. I'm sure there'll be some extra feeling out there because I was on the fringes of the Blues for a couple of years."

Harris played provincial rugby for North Harbour in New Zealand and his coach former All Black Jeff Wilson tried to get Super Rugby teams to give him a start in Super Rugby but none would.

"It was only after I arrived at the Reds for 2011 that I heard that Jeff had pushed my case with the Blues and the other NZ franchises. I'm grateful for that," Harris said.

"Obviously, there's a bit of wanting to prove yourself in every game. And it's a natural feeling when you haven't been selected," Harris said.
