Hours after the Reds learned that their star scrum half Will Genia would be joining the Force in 2013 Ben Lucas re-signed with the Super Rugby champions.
Lucas has re-committed to the Reds and is expected to take on more responsibility for Queensland in the key playmaking positions within coach Ewen McKenzie's squad of 2013 and beyond.
The talented goal kicker is expected to continue his meteoric rise with the Reds which commenced in 2008 where he was the first-choice halfback before relinquishing the No.9 jersey in 2009 to Will Genia through injury.
"Ben has shown he has the versatility to cover a number of positions for us in the past and we see him playing a more influential role in the key playmaking positions moving forward," Reds coach Ewen McKenzie said.
"He has demonstrated in each starting opportunity that he has earned in 2012 and in the past that he is an integral part of this team and he's the type of player and person this organisation is trying to retain and attract.
"Ben also is a product of the Queensland pathways, starting with Queensland Schoolboys and going on to the former Queensland Academy and then through to the elite level.
"We're thrilled Ben has chosen to remain at the Reds as he continues to develop his Rugby in the prime of his career."
Just six games shy of his 50th cap for Queensland, Lucas said he aspires to reach 100 caps during his career in the red jersey.
"I love being in Queensland, my family's here, I've grown up here and I really enjoy being a part of the Reds set-up and playing my rugby here," Lucas said.
"I know the notion of staying at one club has died out somewhat but it really holds value to me, I want to reach 100 games for Queensland and believe it's something to aspire to and to treasure.
"I feel that my best rugby is still to come, I've got a lot to learn and I'm really looking forward to what's ahead for me at the Reds."
