Dan Carter will continue to play Super Rugby for the Crusaders at second-five until he is able to take over the kicking duties from Tom Taylor.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder says that this is not likely to happen for a few weeks at least and with Taylor doing such a good job at 10 there is no rush.

Carter has already played six Super Rugby matches for the Crusaders this season since he returned from a groin injury that ruled him out of the Rugby World Cup.

However Carter has only kicked for goal in the match against the Bulls in Pretoria and missed three relatively easy attempts in the two-point loss.

While Carter has been playing at 12 the seemingly unflappable Tom Taylor has run the Crusaders back line and had the kicking duties in their victories over the Stormers, Hurricanes and Waratahs.

In the last three Super Rugby matches 23-year-old Taylor has missed only two from 25 attempts which takes him to a hit rate of 92 per cent.

In the match against the Hurricanes Taylor hit a post and against the Waratahs his long range attempt went just under the crossbar.

Coach Blackadder said that while Carter was working his way back to full fitness he is still unable to fully practice his goal kicking.

"DC would have to come through a good week of goal kicking to play at 10 and he hasn't been able to do that," Blackadder told the NZHerald.

"But for us it's a win-win situation. He gets to play and work his way back and we have Tom playing extremely well and taking his opportunities."

Blackadder said that teams who were serious about winning the Super Rugby tournament have to have a goal kicker capable of converting more than 80 per cent of their chances.

The coach said that he has the option to move Taylor to 12 and Carter back to 10 but said there is little point in changing a winning combination.

Blackadder said that Crusaders captain Richie McCaw might also have to spend another week playing out of position and is likely to stay on the bench for this week's grand final rematch against the Reds in Christchurch.

McCaw played his first Super Rugby match against the Waratahs on the weekend after a six month lay off and Blackadder said that the the All Blacks captain had recovered well from his 24 minutes of action but there was no reason to rush him back too soon.

"I don't want to compromise him either," he said.

The Crusaders have made another traditional slow start to the season but Blackadder is confident that they are moving in the right direction despite a slow start against the Waratahs.

"We didn't quite start with the same intensity and accuracy as we have in previous weeks."

"We really addressed that at halftime and we were pretty happy with the outcome."

The Crusaders are sitting in a strong position as they are currently in the play off places and have a guaranteed four points from a bye to come.

They also have five of their remaining regular season matches at home.
