England are likely to send what is effectively a second string team to South Africa in June where they will play five matches including three Tests.
England's first choice playing stocks are being hit by the day with injuries to key players.
Leicester blindside flanker Tom Croft has been told that he needs neck surgery which will require up to six months rest.
Northampton Saints second rower Courtney Lawes has been told that he will not be available for the tour after he developed a shin problem during an England training camp and has not played for the last two months.
Two more Northampton Saints players in Tom Wood (foot) and Calum Clark (ban) have also been ruled out due to injury.
Gloucester winger Charlie Sharples and London Wasps scrum-half Joe Simpson and hooker Rob Webber have also been ruled out.
Simpson's unavailabilty could however mean that former England scrum half Danny Care could be recalled for the five match tour.
