Former All Blacks No. 8 Sione Lauaki has been charged with careless driving after crashing his car last month following a Super 14 rugby match in Hamilton.

Lauaki suffered a minor arm injury in the accident in the early morning of April 24 as he drove between Hamilton and Auckland.

His Chiefs Super 14 team said Lauaki had fallen asleep at the wheel and police said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Lauaki, 28, is awaiting sentence on an assault charge after admitting punching a man in a Hamilton bar on March 5.

His sentencing has been delayed to June 24 while the court considers his application for a discharge without conviction.

Lauaki played 17 tests for New Zealand, most recently against Samoa in 2008.
