Wallabies star James O'Connor looks set to miss the Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby tour of South Africa due to a hamstring injury.

O'Connor played his first Super Rugby match yesterday since lacerating his liver in round nine but aggravated a hamstring injury and had to come off shortly after half time.

Rebels coach Damien Hill said O'Connor would have a scan on the injury today but is unlikely to be traveling to South Africa and his place will be taken by Lloyd Johansson.

"I'm not sure of the extent of James' injury but it doesn't look good," Hill told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"We'll have to wait for the scan but on my layman's observation he won't be touring but we'll wait and see."

Hill did however reveal that Kurtley Beale who finished the match against the Reds with bruised ribs would be fit to play in South Africa next week.

"Beale's battered and bruised but he'll battle on and I'm not sure of the extent of James' injury but it doesn't look good," Hill said.

"We'll have to wait for the scan but on my layman's observation he won't be touring but we'll wait and see."

Former Wallaby skipper Stirling Mortlock who will retire at the end of the season looks set to tour South Africa with his team mates after his calf injury didn't flare up against the Reds.

"It actually went a lot better than I anticipated, so it looks like I'm going to South Africa which is really positive," Mortlock said.

Meanwhile Mark Gerrard who has been one of the Rebels best players over the last two years has revealed that he will return to Japan next calling time on his Rebels.

Former Brumbies back Gerrard spent a couple of seasons playing in Japanese rugby before he joined the Rebels for their inaugural season last year.
