James O'Connor has been left out of the Melbourne Rebels twenty-five-man squad for their Super Rugby tour of South Africa and Kurtley Beale has remained in Melbourne for further checks.

James O'Connor pulled a hamstring playing against the Reds on Friday night so he misses the tour which means his Super Rugby participation for 2012 is over.

The Rebels have a match against the Lions in Johannesburg on July 8, before travelling to Cape Town to face the Stormers at Newlands Stadium on July 14.

Kurtley Beale will remain in Melbourne and rest for the next two days, before being assessed by medical staff on Tuesday when a decision will be made on whether he will join the rest of the team.

Rebels squad:

Paul Alo-Emile, Rodney Blake, Al Campbell, Tom Chamberlain, Tim Davidson, Gareth Delve (vc), Adam Freier, Mark Gerrard, Nic Henderson, James Hilgendorf, Julian Huxley, Mitch Inman, Lloyd Johansson, Luke Jones, Richard Kingi, Lachlan Mitchell, Stirling Mortlock (c), Cadeyrn Neville, Jono Owen, Hugh Perrett, Nick Phipps, Hugh Pyle (vc), Ged Robinson, Nic Stirzaker, Cooper Vuna
