Crusaders captain Richie McCaw said he was pleased with his team's performance against Super Rugby's leading team the Chiefs.
The Crusaders held on to give the Chiefs their third loss of the season and to win 21-28 in Hamilton.
Earlier the Crusaders opened a 20-6 lead with first-half tries to back-rower Kieran Read, who almost lost the ball over the line, and lock Luke Romano.
McCaw admitted that the Crusaders were below par last weekend in their 22-23 loss to the Hurricanes.
"We weren't up to it last week and really needed to step up to it tonight," Crusaders captain Richie McCaw said.
"We talked about it and I thought we fronted up well, particularly on their set piece."
The Crusaders can move further up the Super Rugby standings next week when they face the Western Force in Christchurch.
