Queensland Reds prop James Slipper will captain the Reds in Friday 's trial match against the Chiefs on the Sunshine Coast after captain James Horwill was forced to withdraw.
The Reds lock rolled his ankle during a heavy contact session on Tuesday and has reluctantly been withdrawn following the advice of medical staff late Wednesday afternoon.
Horwill will continue to train with the team from next week when a decision will be made on his availability for the Reds Super Rugby season opener against the Brumbies in Canberra.
Slipper will take over the captaincy duties for Friday 's trial against the Chiefs with centre Ben Tapuai chosen as the team 's vice-captain.
