Ben Tapuai scored a late try to seal the Reds a 25-17 victory over the Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.

The Waratahs scored the first points with a Brendan McKibbin penalty but the Reds soon fired into action with two quick tries.

Tries from Dom Shipperley and Ben Tapuai had the Reds leading 17-3 in the first quarter and a hammering looked to be on the cards for the Waratahs.

The Waratahs who had a bye last week so were playing their first Super Rugby match of the season looked to be well off the pace in the early stages but grew stronger as the match wore on.

While the Reds maintained control of the match the Waratahs tightened up and prevented the Reds from running away with the match and kept the scores at 17-3 until half time.

The early part of the second half was controlled by the visiting Waratahs who scored two tries through rookies Israel Folau and Ben Volavala which levelled the scores at 17 all.

The Reds edged ahead to 20-17 with a penalty from Mike Harris and then Ed Quirk made a sensational break but was cut down just short of the line but he managed to pop the ball up for vice captain Tapuai who took the ball and scored his second try of the match and seal the Reds first victory of the season.

The victory, in front of a healthy crowd of 35,801, for the Reds was their fourth in succession over their arch-rivals from New South Wales.

The Reds were missing some key players, including Wallabies captain James Horwill and star halfback Will Genia, and interim skipper James Slipper who missed the second half due to concussion.
